Are you a dedicated educator with a passion for supporting young adults with special educational needs (SEN)?

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled SEN Lecturer/Teacher to join our specialist college team and make a meaningful difference in the lives of our learners. This is an exceptional opportunity to work in a supportive, forward-thinking environment where every student’s potential is nurtured and celebrated.

Committed to providing a nurturing and inclusive learning environment for young adults with a range of special educational needs and disabilities. Our dedicated team works collaboratively to empower learners, develop their independence, and prepare them for life beyond college.

We believe in celebrating every achievement, no matter how small, and fostering a culture of respect, understanding, and ambition. With excellent facilities, strong multi-disciplinary support, and a focus on professional development, we offer an inspiring place to teach and grow.

Key Responsibilities

As a SEN Lecturer/Teacher, you will:

  • Plan and Deliver Differentiated Learning: Create engaging, individualised lesson plans tailored to the needs and abilities of post-16 SEN learners across a range of subjects, including functional skills, life skills, or vocational training.
  • Support Holistic Development: Foster academic, social, emotional, and personal growth, helping students to gain confidence and independence.
  • Implement and Review Individual Learning Plans (ILPs): Collaborate with support staff, therapists, families, and external agencies to set meaningful goals and track progress.
  • Create an Inclusive Learning Environment: Establish a safe, respectful, and structured classroom environment that encourages participation and development.
  • Assess, Monitor, and Report on Progress: Track learner progress effectively and communicate with parents, carers, and stakeholders to support each student’s journey.
  • Use SEN-Specific Strategies: Apply a range of evidence-based teaching strategies and assistive technologies tailored to various learning needs and conditions.
  • Champion Inclusion: Promote a culture of diversity, acceptance, and empowerment across the college community.

Qualifications and Skills Required

To excel in this role, you will need:

  • A recognised teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, CertEd, or equivalent) with QTS or QTLS.
  • A specialist SEN qualification or significant experience teaching learners with additional needs, ideally in a post-16 or college setting.
  • Sound knowledge of autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, communication difficulties, and other complex needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and motivate diverse learners.
  • Patience, empathy, and a person-centred approach to teaching and support.
  • Experience or familiarity with assistive technologies and communication methods such as Makaton, PECS, or AAC is desirable.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of young people and vulnerable adults.

What Makes a Successful SEN Lecturer?

  • Empathy and Understanding: A deep appreciation for each learner’s unique journey and challenges.
  • Adaptability: The ability to tailor teaching to individual goals, EHCPs, and varied learning pathways.
  • Creativity: A talent for delivering engaging lessons that promote independence and lifelong learning.
  • Collaboration: Working closely with multi-disciplinary teams to provide holistic support.
  • Inspiration: Encouraging learners to achieve their personal best, however that may look.
