The job itself
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the South Area Divisional Office based in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council maintains approximately 3500 km of highway network situated in an attractive area of the country. The Council has a reputation for quality service and you will play a vital role in the provision of highway maintenance to a high standard.
Your role will provide highway engineering and maintenance expertise involving the preparation of minor highway works projects within an ongoing highway maintenance programme from identification to completion.
Working in one of five area teams working in partnership with the Councils in-house operational unit and managing external contractors you will provide advice to members of the public, elected members and parish councils together with a range of other stakeholders.
You will be educated to HND/HNC standard in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) with substantial post qualification experience in highway maintenance. You should also be experienced in the supervision and management of highway works, health and safety legislation requirements, budget management responsibility together with effective leadership experience and ability.
Engineers provide evidence against claims brought against our authority. They do this by documenting defects and their severity, the Engineers help protect councils from legal challenges.
You will also possess a working knowledge of highway design standards, engineering contract management and highway law together with the ability to use computer-based IT systems to obtain, analyse and manipulate technical data.
This is a key role in the highway authority and excellent written and oral communication skills are essential together with good customer service skills and the ability to confidently represent the Council at public meetings and other forums.
The Engineer contributes significantly to maintaining road safety and supporting our authority in their responsibilities. The role of Engineer within highways is essential for the delivery of this high-profile public facing service.
