Principal Structural Engineer – Defence Sector
Location: Birmingham | Hybrid Working
Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Salary: £55,000 – £65,000
I am seeking a Principal Structural Engineer to join our clients Birmingham office and lead the structural design and delivery of secure, complex projects within the defence sector. This is a senior technical role within a respected multi-disciplinary consultancy known for delivering innovative, resilient infrastructure across the UK.
You’ll play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering defence infrastructure, from secure facilities to mission-critical assets, working closely with clients including the MOD, DIO, and key defence contractors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the structural design of defence-related buildings and infrastructure projects from concept to completion.
- Manage and mentor a team of structural engineers and technicians, fostering a culture of technical excellence.
- Act as a key client interface, ensuring high-quality service and compliance with security and design standards.
- Collaborate with other disciplines (civil, MEP, environmental) in a multi-disciplinary environment.
- Support business development, bid preparation, and resource planning for structural workstreams.
About You:
- Chartered Structural or Civil Engineer (IStructE or ICE).
- Strong technical background in building structures, ideally including experience in secure or defence-related facilities.
- Proven ability to lead teams and manage complex structural engineering projects.
- Proficient in structural design software (e.g., Tekla, Revit, Robot, or similar).
- Understanding of applicable building regulations, Eurocodes, and security-related compliance.
- Eligible for, or currently holding, UK security clearance (SC or higher) is highly desirable.
