To support SEND (Young people with disabilities) on the Shaw Trusts Supported Internships in helping them progress in their work placements, transition successfully into paid employment, and complete the Pearson employability work skills accreditation. The role involves providing training and support for business partners and families to ensure success during workplace placements and seeking job opportunities within and outside of the host employer.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direction and organisation to the on-site learning programme.
  • Recruit suitable students with disabilities and conduct education assessments for applicants.
  • Plan and deliver daily classroom activities and lesson plans, including virtual sessions, aligned with units to achieve the Pearson employability award (Entry Level 3 to Level 2).
  • Deliver classroom support in literacy and numeracy.
  • Support interns in developing their Pearson portfolios to achieve accreditation and skills, including obtaining letters of recommendation from internship sites.
  • Ensure the emotional and social welfare of interns.
  • Collaborate with local authorities and businesses, attend reviews and meetings to support student progression and employment.
  • Develop Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and transition plans, creating career plans based on individual preferences and skills.
  • Participate in host business inductions to ensure interns understand their roles and learning objectives.
  • Work with job coaches and department managers to develop internship sites, write job descriptions, and plan necessary job modifications.
  • Coordinate with parents, local authorities, and stakeholders to support intern progression.
  • Provide individualized support at work placements, including job coaching, identifying placements, and assistive technology.
  • Build professional relationships with parents to support interns.
  • Educate managers and co-workers on disability awareness.
  • Meet regularly with business liaisons, managers, and peer mentors to discuss progress and challenges.
  • Assist in planning events such as inductions, open days, and graduations with job coaches.
  • Contribute to internal and external marketing efforts through newsletters, websites, tours, community presentations, and social media.
  • Collaborate with employers, families, and other professionals to address training and employment issues.
  • Train interns in personal hygiene, communication, interviewing, and behaviour skills relevant to employment.
  • Participate in decision-making regarding student success and training strategies.
  • Promote standards of the host business to ensure productivity and efficiency.
  • Complete and submit job coaching paperwork accurately.
  • Apply for Access to Work funding on behalf of interns.
  • Provide basic information about benefits and work-related expenses.
  • Ensure compliance with legal responsibilities concerning interns\’ safety and welfare.
  • Understand each student\’s learning difficulties and social/emotional needs, and address them appropriately.
  • Utilize suitable support methods and resources for interns.
  • Undertake relevant training, such as first aid, if appropriate.

Person Specification

  • NVQ Level 6 or equivalent in Careers Education and Guidance, Youth and Community Work, Social Care, or related fields (or willingness to work towards).
  • Experience working with SEND young adults.
  • Level 3 Education and Training Award (PTTLS) or equivalent.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, including IT proficiency, with diverse groups including managers, professionals, young people, and parents.
  • Experience in team leadership and fostering a positive culture.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships with organisations.
  • Well-organized with good workload management skills.
  • Proven track record of achieving KPIs and outcomes for young people.
  • Knowledge of legislation, policies, and guidance related to Children and Young People’s Services and SEND.
