Job Description:
JOB PURPOSE
Under the direction of the class teacher/outreach teacher/Education Authority, assist with the educational support and the care of pupils with special educational needs in or outside the classroom.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The precise duties will be determined by the principal/outreach teacher/Education Authority officer.
SPECIAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT
- Assist the teacher with supporting and caring for pupils with special educational needs, including enabling access to the curriculum and attending to personal needs.
- Develop understanding of the specific needs of supported pupils.
- Assist with authorised programmes like Education Plan and Care Plan, participate in evaluations, and encourage pupil participation.
- Contribute to the inclusion of pupils in mainstream schools under the teacher\’s guidance.
- Support operational and non-invasive medical/clinical needs related to pupil disabilities.
- Assist with behavioural management programmes as directed.
- Help pupils move around the school and on/off transport.
GENERAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT
- Assist pupils in learning effectively both in groups and individually by managing the learning environment, clarifying instructions, motivating pupils, and promoting independence.
- Be aware of school policies and maintain confidentiality.
- Establish supportive relationships with pupils.
- Prepare resources and supervise activities, including off-site activities following risk assessments.
- Provide continuity of care, supervise play and cloakrooms, and assist with medical needs.
- Ensure a safe environment and report any signs needing urgent attention.
ADMINISTRATION
- Assist with classroom administration and record-keeping of pupil progress.
- Provide feedback to teachers and assist with materials production.
OTHER DUTIES
- Attend training, assist work placement students, and perform other duties as assigned within the post level.
