As Building Safety Officer at Watford Colosseum, you\’ll be the key person responsible for keeping everyone—audiences, staff, and artists—safe during our events. Acting as the named Fire Officer on duty, you\’ll monitor health and safety risks, manage emergency procedures, and ensure our security and medical teams meet our high standards.
This is a vital, hands-on role at the heart of every show, perfect for someone calm under pressure, confident in a crowd, and passionate about public safety.
What You\’ll Be Doing
Before the Event
- Inspect fire exits, signage, and firefighting equipment
- Check for fire hazards and ensure high-risk areas (e.g. kitchens, electrics) are safe
- Confirm security coverage meets licensing and evacuation requirements
- Ensure crowd management plans are in place
- Attend staff briefings and assist with FOH team evacuation procedures
- Carry out external venue checks with hostile vehicle mitigation in mind
- Support audience entry with a calm, professional presence
During the Event
- Monitor for risks like smoke, open flames, or overcrowding
- Ensure all escape routes are kept clear and accessible
- Stay in contact with the Duty Manager and act as Fire Marshal if required
- Conduct regular venue walkarounds and remain alert to any safety issues
After the Event
- Assist with safe audience exit and gather feedback
- Debrief with the Duty Manager and record any incidents or concerns
- Raise any safety or maintenance issues
- Support venue lock-up, including final checks of doors, lights, windows, and FOH areas
What We\’re Looking For
- SIA License holder with practical experience in venue operations or stewarding (preferred)
- Basic fire safety training / Fire Marshal training
- Relevant qualification in Security Management and Crowd Management (or equivalent vocational training/experience)
- Live fire extinguisher training
- IOSH Fire Safety for Managers
- First Aid Trained
- Evacuation chair training (Site specific type)
- Understanding of fire strategy, fire risk assessment and fire impact assessment procedure.
- Understanding of evacuation routes & plans
- Working knowledge of fire alarms, event mode, means of detection, means of suppression (Fixed / Portable).
- A basic understanding of fire compartmentation and refuge points.
