Ashton Recruitment require a HGV Driver/Refuse Team Leader for our local government client based in Craigavon.

Position: HGV Driver/Refuse Team Leader (Public Sector)

Location: Banbridge

Duration: Fixed-Term Contract for 3 months, maybe extended

Hours of work: Mon – Thrus 7:00 – 15:00, Fri 7:00-14:30

The post holder will drive the waste collection vehicles in a safe manner whilst providing advice and assistance to members of the public regarding waste collection services.

Duties will include:

  • Drive and manoeuvre the vehicle to the collection points of all refuse containers.
  • Depending on operations either:
  • Empty contents of the vehicle at the landfill site or the Community Recycling Centre;
  • Drive vehicle to landfill site, composting or recycling plants as appropriate and offload contents in accordance with procedures in place at the relevant facilities.
  • Supervision of assigned operatives. Ensure that assigned operatives fulfil their duties in full and in accordance with established procedures.
  • Ensure the safety and security of the waste collection vehicle and carry out checks each morning using the relevant check sheet and report any defects or damage to the vehicle to the Mechanics/Operations Supervisor.
  • Wash the vehicle externally each week and ensure the interior is adequately cleaned between bin collections to avoid contamination of loads that are consigned to the composting facility. 6. Retain a level of knowledge on the operation of the brown bin and kerbside dry recyclable collection services and provide advice to householders on same as required.
  • As appropriate help resolve complaints/ service requests from the public regarding waste collection and report to the Supervisor any issues that cannot be directly resolved.
  • Work as part of a team to ensure the completion of allocated daily schedules.
  • Where appropriate, deal directly with any matter reported by waste collection operatives in fulfilment of their duties, and in all other instances forward matters to the Supervisor for attention.
  • Report all accidents to the Supervisor.
  • Implement appropriate procedures to control and contain environmental impact of activities (including an immediate pollution control response), under the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
  • Ensure delivery to households, of waste educational and promotional material as required.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of all Council services by always remaining observant and reporting to the Supervisor any issues or observations of relevance to the efficient and effective delivery of Council\’s cleansing services, e.g. incidents of illegally deposited waste, significant littering, overflowing or defective litter/dog litter bins.   • Maintain a positive image of the Council by ensuring that personal appearance and conduct is always of a high standard.
  • Have due regard for personal health and safety, the safety of colleagues and public, and observe all Council health and safety rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Valid DVTA Driver Qualification Card;
  • Valid Digital Tachograph Card.
  • 1 year\’s relevant experience in each of the following areas:
    • Driving Category C vehicles;
    • Operating mechanical lifting equipment/hoist;
    • Dealing with the public in a customer service capacity;
    • Completing accurate records of scheduled and completed work.
  • Excellent communications skills;
  • Ability to work as part of a team;
  • Ability to work on own initiative;
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service;
  • Health and Safety focused.
  • Ability to follow clear instructions
  • Full current driving licence (valid in the UK) including entitlement to drive Category C vehicles (over 3500kg).
  • Experience in refuse collection and/ or recycling centre duties.
