About Health, Safety & Environment And The Role

The Health & Safety team ensure that we operate safe working environments for all THG employees and visitors. The team provide on-site support to ensure risks are managed in a timely fashion, as well as completing audits and checks to so the business meets all health, safety and environment-related legislative requirements.

Are you an experienced HSE leader ready to drive cultural and operational excellence across a global business?

We’re hiring a Head of HSE to take full ownership of our Health, Safety & Environment function, supporting multiple business units across manufacturing, fulfilment, retail, office and hospitality environments. This is a critical leadership position shaping how we protect our people, assets, brand, and reputation.

As the Head of HSE your responsibilities will be:

  • Leading the design and implementation of the Group HSE strategy, aligning with business objectives
  • Driving a proactive HSE culture, focusing on risk ownership, behaviour-based safety, and continuous improvement
  • Ensuring Group-wide legal compliance across all jurisdictions, including ISO 45001, local legislation, and industry best practice
  • Managing and developing a high-performing team of regional and site-based HSE professionals, ensuring capability, engagement, and succession planning
  • Implementing and maintaining safety management systems, permit-to-work schemes, contractor control, and high-risk activity governance (e.g. working at height, confined space, machinery)
  • Overseeing audits, inspections, and incident investigations, including root cause analysis and tracking of corrective/preventive action plans
  • Rolling out and maintaining the Group HSE training matrix, conducting regular gap analyses, and supporting operational and leadership development
  • Delivering transparent, data-driven reporting to senior leadership, including KPIs, trend analysis, lagging/leading indicators, and quarterly board packs
  • Engaging with regulators, insurers, auditors, and certification bodies during inspections, claims, or certification reviews
  • Developing and maintaining HSE policies, standards, and procedures, ensuring consistency across sites and clarity of expectations
  • Overseeing the Group HSE legal register and risk registers, ensuring risks are assessed, recorded, and mitigated through proportionate controls
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams including Operations, Facilities, HR, Legal, and ESG to embed HSE into day-to-day decision making
  • Supporting emergency preparedness and crisis management, including incident escalation protocols and business continuity integration
  • Championing innovation and digital transformation in HSE, identifying tools and platforms that improve visibility, compliance, and engagement
  • Driving contractor and third-party compliance, including onboarding, monitoring, and evaluation processes

What skills and experience do I need for this role?

  • 10+ years’ experience in HSE leadership roles, ideally across high-risk and multi-site operations
  • Strong working knowledge of ISO 45001 and applicable UK/EU/US/AUS legislation
  • A data-driven mindset, confident in using metrics to drive behaviour and improvement
  • Chartered Membership of IOSH or equivalent (e.g. NEBOSH Diploma, NVQ Level 5 in H&S)
  • Track record of cultural transformation and high-impact HSE performance delivery
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills – from shop floor to C suite
  • Experience in incident response, crisis leadership, and regulatory liaison
