Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity to work as a Physician\’s Associate within the hospital\’s Medicine department for a 6-month fixed-term contract.

The post holder will have graduated (or be within 1 month of graduating) from an accredited Physician’s Associate Training Program and certified by the National Commission on Certification for Physician’s Assistants/Associates (NCCPA).

They will work under the direction and clinical supervision of the medical consultant on their base ward as part of the medical workforce on the ward.

The role is principally to provide the team with reliable medical assistance to support patient care, especially relating to patient flow and continuity of care. The independence of the post-holder is expected to develop during the post, leading to greater and varied clinical responsibilities depending on the needs.

The post holder will participate in quality improvement and clinical governance of the ward.

Main duties of the job

The Physician Associate will support the specialist trainees, core medical trainees, and junior clinical fellows in delivering high-quality care. The Physician Associate will be trained to exercise autonomy in medical decision-making within the physician-PA relationship, including:

  • Conducting daily ward rounds with the medical team, reviewing patients, and formulating
  • Appropriate clinical plans
  • Formulating differential diagnoses based on history and physical examinations
  • Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, radiological studies, and therapies
  • Recognizing early stages of health issues through normal and abnormal findings
  • Establishing differential diagnoses, making treatment plans, and initiating emergency treatments when necessary
  • Instructing and counseling patients regarding their health
  • Referring and consulting with appropriate specialists regarding patient care
  • Performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures under supervision, including venipuncture
  • Communicating timely with other health professionals
  • Documenting all aspects of patient care and completing required paperwork
  • Working with staff to deliver national guidelines and objectives for emergency care
  • Assessing patients, performing cannulation and venipuncture, and ensuring efficient pathways of care
