About the job
Our Carriage Cleaners are an integral part of the depot maintenance team based at Laira in Plymouth and are responsible for ensuring our trains are presented to the highest standard for our customers.
Your main responsibilities will be
- To carry out all cleaning activities internally and externally. Use of chemicals and techniques in accordance with all relevant manuals and specifications.
- Maintain and enhance all cleaning standards.
- Reporting any damage, maintenance issues, or lost property found on the train.
- Completing cleaning logs or checklists to confirm tasks have been carried out.
- Seek out ways to improve standards and flexibility within the cleaning team.
- Create, enhance and maintain effective working relationships.
- Follow all COSHH regulations when handling chemicals.
- Create and maintain the necessary safe conditions for work activity and comply with all safety standards.
- Undertake depot cleaning duties as required.
- Rectify minor customer facing defects as required.
You’ll need to be
- Able to demonstrate evidence of working on your own and within a team.
- Able to complete tasks to a set standard, in accordance with specification/procedure and to deadlines.
- Committed to delivering cleaning to the highest standard both inside & outside of the train and able to follow instructions.
- Enthusiastic and well organised in your approach towards work.
- Must be able to deal with biohazards, such as blood and the safe disposal of sharps i.e. discarded syringes, broken glass, razor blades etc.
- Prepared to work at locations outside of Laira Depot when required.
- Working efficiently to complete tasks within strict timeframes, especially during train turnaround times.
- Willingness to adjust to changes in cleaning schedules, tasks, or working conditions.
- Understand and follow instructions from supervisors or team leaders.
- Willing to learn new skills and participate in training.
- Working in confined spaces or outdoors in various weather conditions.
As a minimum you’ll need to have
- Knowledge of COSHH and Health and Safety at Work. IOSH training would be desirable.
- Previous cleaning experience.
- NVQ level 1 or 2 cleaning and support services or working towards this would be desirable.
Additional Information
The successful candidate will work on a permanent Night shift pattern throughout the week including weekends. Laira Depot is a small team where everyone works together to get the job done.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake a pre-employment depot medical.
