Our Fire Safety Engineering team at Sweco have a core objective to provide strategic fire safety advice and develop fire safety strategies that satisfy the functional requirements of the building regulations, providing solutions that represent a mix of best-practice, expert judgement and innovative fire engineering technologies.

We currently have a fantastic opportunity for a Technical Director to join our Fire Engineering team within our Building Standards Division in Birmingham. The role can be worked flexibly with a mix of office and home-based working (minimum 3 days in the office/on site) and the option to adjust start/finish times.
Our Fire Engineering teams provide clients with cost-effective and bespoke solutions for the full range of fire safety design in different sectors.
What does the role involve?
You will be working across a variety of projects as part of a wider team based in the UK with the opportunity to collaborate with other Sweco business areas and on international projects. This role will suit somebody with significant design consultancy experience and possessing a recognised fire safety engineering qualification with a recognised track record in delivery of projects from design through to construction and completion.
As part of this role, you will sit within a wider technical excellence team where the focus is on the technical oversight and delivery of projects, albeit candidates with strong business acumen and line management are welcomed.
The main responsibilities of the role include:
- Developing Fire Safety Strategies during Design and Construction stages.
- Preparing technical engineering analysis using relevant guidance documents and methods i.e. prescriptive and performance based.
- Carrying out site visits when required.
- Attending internal and external meetings.
- Preparing fee proposals.
- Supporting the team in developing technical knowledge.
- Overseeing and managing projects from inception to completion.
- Liaising with clients on a daily basis.
- Reviewing and authorising work done by others.
To be successful in this role you’ll possess:
- Experience working in a similar role with extensive experience in fire safety engineering.
- A proven background in fire safety engineering with an excellent understanding of fire engineered solutions
- Good problem solving/contingency planning skills with ability to find quick, innovative and practical solutions
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to adapt your style to suit difference audiences.
- Excellent consultancy, communication and relationship management skills.
- Experience of delivering across a multi-site organisation.
- A bachelor\’s or master\’s degree in Fire Engineering.
- Full membership with the IFE (Institution of Fire Engineers) and working towards or have achieved chartership status via IFE.
