A Quantity Surveyor with a keen interest in construction disputes is required to work for a professional consultancy based in Manchester.
The client is seeking a Quantity Surveyor, who can join their team of expert staff providing a range of commercial and quantum services to their clients. They will provide the successful candidate with a unique and exciting role with frequent and increasing exposure to construction claims and disputes.
The role would be the ideal first step into a Quantum claims role for a chartered (or working towards being chartered) Quantity Surveyor. You would split your time between carrying out pre and post-contract Quantity Surveying responsibilities, whilst gradually building up your claims and disputes experience on contentious projects. This will include working on live projects, contract administration, risk management and forensic analysis for projects in dispute.
You will be based from the client’s office in Manchester and given some flexibility for home working, but this role will require occasional travel to sites and client offices nationally.
The client prides itself on working within all sectors of the construction and engineering industry. Therefore, this role can deliver an exciting variation of project exposure on domestic and international projects, which can include (but not limited to) housing, residential, power and civil sector(s).
Responsibilities and Duties
- Managing project-related cost and value reporting
- Analysing initial budget estimates to final figures across the whole project lifecycle
- Preparing, negotiating, and reviewing contract administration
- Drafting, managing, and reporting contractual obligations from procurement to final account
- Determining schedules by monitoring programmes and aiding clients with risk management
- Providing accurate assessments of progress and reports
- Delivering Forensic analysis in alternative dispute resolution (ADR)
- Evaluating clear and impartial evidence for tribunals (ADR)
As a consultant, your responsibilities will also include:
- Management of internal and external project teams
- Training, development, and performance management of employees, as applicable
- Acting as a role model and mentor to other employees
- Providing support to Senior Management and Manager – commercial & quantum
- Promoting yourself with professional institutions and being involved with developing the construction professionals of the future
Desired Skills and Experience
The successful Quantity Surveyor must have:
- Experience in pre and post-contract services on large-scale, complex projects
- 3 – 5 years’ post-graduate experience as well as working in Consultant and Contracting backgrounds expected
- Rounded knowledge of a variety of construction and engineering projectsis required
- Ideally have some familiarity with alternative dispute resolution work. Namely, forensically analysing quantum-related data in preparation for mediation or adjudication
- Exposure with standard contract types such as NEC and JCT, as well as demonstrated expertise in contract administration desired
- Excellent knowledge of the impacts of change, delay, and disruption on a project’s cost
- Previous Quantity Surveying experience working on multiple projects throughout the whole lifecycle of the project expected
- Competently check costs, conduct valuations and analyse final account figures
- Must have exceptional IT and writing experience, and be able to demonstrate previous examples of successfully writing narratives and producing / assisting with quantum related reports
- Must have strong time management skills and attention to detail
- Be completely comfortable in a client-facing role
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
- Must have attained or be working towards chartership (MRICS/MCIArb) strongly preferred
- BSc or equivalent construction or engineering degree preferred
