Job overview

The post holder acts as a nurse specialist/ sonographer in the area of emergency gynaecology and early pregnancy care. The post holder will act as a resource for this across the gynaecology unit. The post is one of continuing development with training and leadership opportunities.

The post holder will work closely with consultant lead and lead nurse to ensure the delivery of evidence – based care throughout the unit. The post holder will participate in developing and implementing service development and ensuring high quality care.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in Emergency Gynaecology unit, liaising with those involved to ensure the appropriate imaging, reporting and management of the patient is provided when necessary. The post holder will work to independently assessing, scanning (working towards) and triaging patients with consultant support.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communication:

  • To assist in the delivery of an advanced specialist nursing service for women experiencing pregnancy loss and other gynaecological conditions
  • Develop and maintain relationships and effective communication with staff and their representatives in a multi-disciplinary team. Ensure patient safety and high quality care through effective communication.

To ensure collaborative working between directorates and other specialities (eg imaging, histology, cytology, the gynaecology MDT) communicating in a professional, concise, accurate and detailed manner

Organisational

  • To plan, prioritise and organise daily workload efficiently and effectively with regard to patient management, use of time, work load prioritisation including professional demands of the service. Delegate tasks as required.
  • To lead the co-ordination of day-to-day work practices and allocation of staff/ team within designated area. Utilise appropriate support to ensure safe staffing and environment for patients. To manage sickness/ performance issues with support from nurse manager.
  • To liaise with the medical nursing team as a senior nurse in women’s health and work cohesively with all members of the gynaecology team.
  • To deal with all patient queries and complaints during stand by hours and take appropriate action as required, logging all complaints and provide the correct information as and when necessary.

Management

  • • Discusses with the Matron and Head of Nursing any plans in relation to service development, service improvement, and the resolution of any on-going problems
  • • Ensure promotion of well being, safely and interests of patients, staff and visitors to clinical area.
  • • Ensure maintenance of high infection control standards and ensure decontamination of equipment guidelines are followed
  • • Ensure risk is minimised and datix forms are completed as necessary.
  • • Discusses with the Matron and Head of Nursing any plans in relation to service development, service improvement

Clinical

  • • To be gynaecology/ early pregnancy sonography accredited (working towards) and be competent in performing scans and managing own caseload of patients.
  • • To professional and legally take responsibility to ensure a high standard of clinical care and patient welfare for all patients whilst in the Department and under management, supporting junior staff to do likewise. Assess, Plan, Implement and evaluate care of patients in the department.
  • • To offer support and leadership to junior members of staff through mentorship and preceptorship
  • • To undertake audit, measurement and evaluation of your own work and current practices through the use of Evidence Based Practice (EBP), audits and outcome measures, either individually or with a clinical specialist or manager. To make recommendations for change

Communication:

  • • To assist in the delivery of an advanced specialist nursing service for women experiencing pregnancy loss and other gynaecological conditions
  • • To ensure collaborative working between directorates and other specialities (eg imaging, histology, cytology, the gynaecology MDT) communicating in a professional, concise, accurate and detailed manner.
  • • To accept responsibility for own patient caseload, ensuring all women have an accurate plan of care, which reflects the assessment undertaken and incorporates the issues and recommendations made ensuring clear documentation in the patient’s records and hand held
  • • To communicate results to patients and ensure that follow up and treatment plans are complete
  • • To communicate with patients and clients through the use of advocates, information leaflets and if necessary family members in an appropriate manner to their level of understanding.
