Main duties of the job
The Wessex Neurological Centre (WNC) is one of the five largest centres in the UK, providing specialist adult and paediatric clinical services for a wide range of neurological conditions. The catchment area extends across Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, West Sussex, Wiltshire and the Channel Islands, a population of approximately 3 million. The consultant teams in the department have highly developed sub-specialist skills.

The WNC Neurosurgery Team prides itself on its collegiate approach and strong focus on providing the best care and outcomes for our patients from across the Wessex region and further afield. Whilst the team deliver a sub-specialist approach the roots of all our services remain fully integrated ensuring a robust MDT approach and profession support.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
You will have specific remit for the delivery of complex adult Neurosurgery, elective and emergency as well as contributing to the management of elective routine and complex neurosurgery. You will be expected to be a core member of the Paediatric neurosurgery subspecialty team and that will include supporting with the 1 in 4 on-call.
This post provides an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic colleague to join us, and play an integral part in developing these services.
The department prides itself on excellent outcomes achieved through sub specialism, team-working (including joint operating) and a robust MDT approach. You will be an experienced neurosurgeon with a background in paediatric neurosurgery and functional neurosurgery. Our ideal candidate should be an enthusiastic team-player who can embrace the philosophy and values of our department.

Individuals wishing to apply must be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC).
The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
- FRCS (Neurosurgery) or equivalent
- Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
- Able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in general emergency neurosurgery
- >/= 12/12 post-CCT Fellowship in functional Neurosurgery
- High level of experience in managing paediatric neurosurgery on-call / urgent cases
- High level of experience in spinal cord stimulator surgery
- Experience of research with publications and managing clinical trials
- Experience of day-case surgery
Desirable criteria
- MSc or equivalent in Research
- In date GCP training certificate
- >/= 12/12 post-CCT Fellowship in Paediatric Neurosurgery
- RCS(England) approved fellowship
- Supervising research by junior staff
- Evidence of service improvement
- Consultant level experience in functional neurosurgery
- Consultant experience of adult and paediatric on-call
