About Us
The Northern Lighthouse Board is the General Lighthouse Authority for Scotland and the Isle of Man, responsible for the superintendence and management of all lighthouses, buoys and beacons within those waters. We have provided this vital safety service to mariners since 1786.
The Role – Overview
Based at the NLB’s Headquarters in central Edinburgh, in this unique role as Coastal Inspector you will ensure that all marine activities and developments in Scottish waters are marked to a standard which ensures safety for mariners. Although primarily an office based role responding to marine licence applications and other inputs, the role also entails frequent inspection visits to harbours and fish farms, and occasional time at sea on NLB vessels.
Salary and Benefits
- £41,244 per annum rising to £45,374 per annum after 1 year in post.
· A Civil Service Pension with an average employer contribution of 28%
· Annual Leave allowance of 25 days, rising by 1 day per year of service up to 30 days
· 11.5 days for Public Holidays

Our ideal candidate will have the following Qualifications/ Experience
- A background/ qualification in Marine Navigation
- Educated to HND level or similar
- Experience with electronic charts/GIS
- A high standard of written and verbal communication is essential
- Full Driving Licence
