Job Summary

RGU\’s Department of Student Life supports students to develop the skills required for success at university and beyond through the Study Skills Service. A Writing and Study Skills Tutor is required to join the Study Skills team on a permanent basis to provide academic skills support to students across the university.

You will have a drive to deliver high quality student support which meets the needs of the University\’s students across various disciplines and stages. Working closely with the wider Student Life team, you will design and deliver support through a variety of means, including workshops and classes, online resources, learning development projects and initiatives, and one-to-one work with students.

You will be a skilled professional with experience in delivering and developing writing and study skills support, promoting independent learning, and creating high-quality learning materials. A strong commitment to inclusivity and the ability to support students from diverse backgrounds and learning styles is essential.

Job Description

RESPONSIBLE TO: Academic Skills Manager

RESPONSIBLE FOR: No supervisory responsibility

PURPOSE OF POST: Provide high quality academic skills support to students. Joining an existing team of tutors, who work across the University\’s subject areas, delivering writing and study skills support to students.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

To provide tutor support to students in all aspects of academic writing and study skills through a range of face-to-face and online modes.

To develop and implement support targeted at specific groups of learners (for example, students from widening access backgrounds, international students) ensuring interventions meet learner need and support academic achievement.

To support the development of the Department\’s online support offer through evaluation and authoring of content.

To develop, coordinate and deliver initiatives to support student participation and achievement.

To build and maintain good working relationships with other Departments and Schools across the University

To undertake a variety of appropriate administrative responsibilities

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Professional Memberships

First Degree

Knowledge

Knowledge of learning, teaching and assessment in higher education.

Knowledge of English grammar and academic writing conventions.

Experience

Demonstrable experience of delivering and developing writing and study skills tuition

Experience of supporting independent learning amongst the student body

Experience of creating high-quality learning materials

Experience of working with students from diverse backgrounds and different learning styles

Experience of working with students from a variety of support needs (for example, students with a declared disability; widening access students; distance learners; international students)
