Position Summary
The Engineer III (Life Safety & Fire Protection) is a technical expert and design leader responsible for providing building, fire and life safety code analysis, as well as establishing fire protection design (and criteria) for design projects across all sectors. This role is entrusted with managing major portions of project scopes and is a key contributor to quality assurance, client interaction, and mentorship. Engineer IIIs are expected to independently produce engineering deliverables, oversee delegated work, and ensure high performance in documentation and coordination. Individuals in this role shape project strategies, lead technical meetings, and elevate firm standards through coaching, innovation, and ownership.
Essential Functions:
- Perform code analysis for project teams relative to life safety, building and fire codes, and applicable provisions of MEP codes.
- Lead design and documentation of fire protection systems with minimal oversight, managing both calculations and drawing deliverables.
- Develop fire protection and life safety concepts, design criteria, code interpretation, and performance-based solutions for projects across all market sectors.
- Help develop and maintain design standards related to fire protection design.
- Identify applicable codes and standards for building design projects.
- Lead project team and delegate tasks for fire protection design projects, assist in conceptual design development, review fire protection design documents.
- Participate in project master planning efforts, including water supply analysis for fire protection and conceptual fire protection systems design.
- Validate and approve key calculations and their application to design decisions.
- Oversee the setup of Revit models, views, and documentation workflows for fire protection.
- Serve as the primary technical contact for specific questions related to fire protection and life safety.
- Review and approve submittals, RFIs, and substitution requests; coordinate responses with the broader team.
- Perform site visits, field surveys, and punch lists with high autonomy; issue professional-level field reports.
- Mentor engineers and designers through delegation, feedback, and technical coaching.
- Lead technical portions of project meetings with clients, contractors, and consultants related to fire protection and life safety.
Requirements
- Bachelor\’s degree required.
- P.E. licensure required.
- 10+ years in the AEC Industry preferred.
- An understanding of the financial status of projects as they progress, development of cost budgets for projects, value of client relationships and be able to deliver projects with a focus on the quality is required.
- Written and verbal communication skills commensurate with the position required.
- Strong organizational skills required.
- Revit experience required.
- Experience with computers, specifically for word processing, spreadsheet use/creation and email required.
- Detail-oriented, self-motivated, enthusiastic, flexible and curious personalities required.
- Ability to work well with others under deadline situations required.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to effectively communicate in writing and verbally via phone, video conferencing, and in-person.
- Visual acuity to perform responsibilities.
