We have an exciting opportunity for an ambitious Chartered Physiotherapist or Graduate Sports Therapist to join a medical team dedicated to providing world-class medical and health support to emerging elite women and girls’ rugby players in North Wales, ensuring players are prepared for the demands of professional and international rugby.

The purpose of this role is to lead the medical provision for the Player Development Centre North (PDC North), delivering a high standard of medical support for women and girls throughout the PDC, the partner college (Coleg Llandrillo), and associated Satellite Centres. This aligns with national strategies to optimize player development and progression. The role will play a key part in achieving the WRU strategic goal of ‘developing more and better players for the professional game and for Wales through enriching life experiences’.

Location: Parc Eirias, Colwyn Bay, North Wales/Remote

The Person

The successful candidate will be a Qualified Physiotherapist, Sports Rehabilitator, or Sports Therapist (registered with the HCPC, BASRaT, or STT) with at least 2 years supporting age-grade athletes in professional and/or international sport. Experience supporting female athletes is preferred. They will also hold or be able to obtain pitch-side immediate care qualifications (including WRU Introduction to Immediate Care in Rugby, RFU Level 2 ICIS course, and 2-day Lubas Medical Sports Trauma Management), have undertaken CPD specific to sport and exercise medicine, and possess appropriate professional indemnity.

The candidate should have a strong understanding of the physical and physiological needs of female athletes aged 16–24, including considerations around growth, maturation, female health, and injury prevention. Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills are essential for working effectively within a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with coaches, medical staff, and national programme leads.

The Role

The role involves leading medical and player health services at PDC North to support the effective progression of North Walian players from school/college to national programmes. Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering medical support and injury rehabilitation during training and match days.
  • Implementing medical screening and injury monitoring, including medical history, demographic data, concussion baseline testing, consent, and musculoskeletal assessments.
  • Providing pitch-side medical care at Coleg Llandrillo Girl’s WSC Rugby fixtures and weekly clinics at Coleg Llandrillo.
  • Leading staffing and organization of Satellite Centre sessions, including recruiting sessional staff as needed.
  • Collaborating with the Women’s Pathway Therapist to deliver female athlete health initiatives, injury prevention, and player education.
  • Providing medical services to Wales Women U20s and U18s programmes at the discretion of the Women’s Pathway Therapist, ensuring continuity of care at PDC North.
  • Participating actively in the PDC North management team and the wider Welsh Rugby medical community, contributing ideas and practices.

WRU Requirements

Proficiency in IT, particularly Microsoft Office, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders are essential. Welsh language skills and a valid UK driver’s license are desirable. The role is subject to an enhanced DBS check.
