About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UKs national synchrotron science facility, enabling world-changing research across physics, chemistry, materials science, biology, and engineering. As we embark on the transformative Diamond-II upgrade, we are expanding our engineering team to support the next generation of cutting-edge science.
About The Role
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Analyst to join our multidisciplinary engineering team. You will play a key role in the mechanical design and structural integrity assessment of components critical to the Diamond-II upgrade, including high-precision accelerator and beamline systems. Many of the FEA applications at Diamond include the ability of optical and mechanical components to handle high heat loads without excessive deformation, vibration or a material durability issue.
Responsibilities Will Include
- Performing advanced FEA simulations (static, thermal) on complex mechanical systems.
- Supporting the design and optimisation of accelerator and beamline components, including vacuum vessels, support structures, precision assemblies and X-ray optics.
- Collaborating with mechanical engineers, scientists, and external partners to ensure robust and reliable designs.
- Validating simulation results through experimental data and analytical methods.
- Documenting analysis and presenting findings to stakeholders.
About You
You will have a degree in a relevant STEM subject, or you will demonstrate equivalent working experience.
You Will Demonstrate Knowledge Of
Mechanics of structures, materials, and heat transfer.
- Analytical solutions for elastic problems.
- Proven experience in FEA software in thermal, mechanical, and vibrational analysis (ANSYS preferred)
You Will Also Show The Ability To
- Transfer physical mechanical problems into Finite element models.
- Establish procedures and methodologies for performing, verifying, and validating FEA thermo-mechanical analysis.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
Any Experience In The Below Is Particularly Beneficial
- Optics
- Ultra High Vacuum environments
- Familiarity with synchrotron or other accelerator technologies
- Knowledge of scripting/programming tools such as python or Matlab
Benefits
Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 26 days annual leave plus Christmas closure, public holidays, 2 annual volunteering days and flexible working hours. We also offer an excellent defined benefit pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.
To Apply
Please use the online application process to apply and tell us why you believe you are suitable for this role.
The closing date for applications is 27th July 2025, however, we encourage early applications as some candidates may be interviewed before this date.
