Mechanism Engineer | Spacecraft Design | Guildford Mechanism Engineer required to join a highly admired Spacecraft / Satellite business in Guildford. The Mechanism Team sits under the Mechanical Engineering Department (about 50 engineers). The team is responsible for anything that moves on or within the spacecraft. We are seeking an enthusiastic mechanism engineer to support the existing and expanding range of space mechanisms used for space missions. The vacancy requires a mixture of electro-mechanical technical design, analysis, production, and test coupled with the ability to manage multiple work packages. The role will allow the engineer to influence the product offerings to fulfil the requirements of mission-level projects. Strong engineering capability coupled with a positive can-do attitude is essential being a space-guru is not! The Opportunity Mechanisms engineers face significant challenges during spacecraft launch and whilst in orbit. Complex requirements and high reliability missions requires high levels of attention to detail whilst being able to provide low cost solutions. Every day is an exciting challenge! Key Tasks Deliver existing mechanism products with a high level of reliability to schedule and budget. Design and analysis of new or evolution of existing mechanism products including working with many other areas of the business. Hands-on engineering including development, flight build, testing and spacecraft module integration. Managing multiple tasks and work packages in parallel with changeable priorities. Interfacing with internal and external customers including presentations and technical reviews. Authoring technical documents (e.g., design reports, procedures, test reports). Person Specification Experience You will have proven experience in an engineering industry in a mechanical engineer, mechanical design engineer, mechanism engineer or related role. Ideally you will be able to demonstrate mechanical design experience of stress-critical components, implementing precision tolerance analysis, drafting, materials and manufacturing methods (DFM). Ideally, you will have awareness and understanding of the use of electronics and software/firmware in an engineering environment and demonstrated ability to help electronics/software engineers test and debug modules effectively. Exposure to technical and project reviews (internal and customer facing) would also be an advantage. Education & Skills You will hold at a minimum an engineering degree (typically mechanical, mechatronic or aerospace for example). A space engineering qualification is not required for this role. You will be self-motivated, accountable, creative and have a very high attention to detail whilst being comfortable in a technically challenging environment. You will have some practical ability, either within or outside the work environment. Ability to work autonomously and communicate in a One Team environment. Ability to work under pressure in an organised manner: positive and persistent attitude. Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities. Knowledge of components (e.g. bearings, actuators, transmissions, feedback devices) is an advantage. Use of CAD and FEA software knowledge preferable with design/idealisation intent.
