The Role;
We are seeking an exceptional and forward-thinkingDirector of Teaching and Learning to join our Leadership Team at Newham College. This role is critical in driving forward the Colleges vision for outstanding education provision across Further Education, Higher Education and Apprenticeships.
You will lead on developing and delivering a whole-College strategy to improve the quality and consistency of teaching, learning and assessment. With a strong focus on preparing for Ofsted and raising learner achievement, this role requires a collaborative leader who can support, challenge and inspire staff to deliver the highest standards of education.
You will also oversee the Colleges CPD and teacher training strategy, driving innovation in pedagogy and digital learning, and ensuring the professional growth and development of all teaching staff
Key Responsibilities.
- Lead the development and implementation of the Colleges Teaching and Learning Strategy, aligned with the Ofsted framework.
- Provide strategic direction and operational support to drive continuous improvement in teaching, learning, and assessment.
- Work in partnership with curriculum leaders to implement effective quality improvement plans that raise learner outcomes.
- Oversee the delivery of high-quality CPD and initial teacher training, including the Level 3 AET and Level 5 DET.
- Develop and implement robust systems for evaluating teaching quality, including learning walks, deep dives, and learner feedback.
- Intervene in underperforming departments and support recovery through coaching, data analysis, and targeted strategies.
- Support teachers in using digital technologies, including AI, to enhance learning.
- Lead the development and completion of the College Self-Assessment Report (SAR) and Quality Improvement Plan (QIP).
- Promote and celebrate best practice in teaching through internal and external recognition.
- Ensure timely and effective responses to learner feedback and complaints.
- Represent the College externally and lead cross-college improvement projects.
Our Ideal candidate should have the following qualifications, skills and experience.
Essential
- A relevant degree and formal teaching qualification (e.g. Cert Ed, PGCE).
- At least 5 years of successful teaching experience with demonstrable impact on learner outcomes.
- A proven track record of leading teaching improvement strategies and managing teams to achieve targets.
- In-depth understanding of Ofsteds Education Inspection Framework and experience of participating in inspections.
- Experience of delivering CPD, coaching, and/or teacher training.
- Strong understanding of digital teaching methods and the use of technology (including AI) in education.
- Excellent interpersonal, leadership and communication skills.
- Strong analytical and report-writing skills.
- Experience in producing and evaluating SARs and QIPs.
Desirable
- Experience within the Higher Education sector.
- Experience of managing quality assurance with Awarding Organisations.
- A track record of promoting innovation and recognition in teaching and learning.
