Role: Catastrophe Modelling Analyst – Crisis Management (Political Violence and Political Risks)

The global, geopolitical, landscape over the last few years has been incredibly volatile. With the Russia/Ukraine War, tensions mounting in the Middle East, and violent protests in the United States it is clear that Insurance plays a pivotal role in ensuring the continuity of business and services across the globe. Our underwriters use innovative methods to write profitable business whilst maintaining a high quality product for our clients, and the insights provided by the Exposure Management function are integral to our risk selection and portfolio optimisation processes.

Within Exposure Management, the Crisis Management team use exposure capture and reporting systems, to provide analysis on MS AUL’s Political Violence and Political Risk classes so that Executives and Underwriters are informed to make the best possible decision making to achieve overall profits and targets. About The Job

Inter-business relationships

  • Bring clarity, transparency and understanding to the users and clients of Exposure Management Data and Analytics

  • To be a key point of contact for underwriters and other stakeholders, with queries relating to the pricing of accounts and portfolio reporting

  • Maintain and grow sustainable relationships with the Underwriting, Claims, Pricing and Underwriting Performance teams, approaching conversations with the ability to challenge and with a continuous improvement mindset

Analytics and reporting

  • Assist in the production of weekly reports to the underwriters and provide insights on portfolio movements, including commentary on our position against tolerances, and MS Amlin’s exposure profile in geopolitically sensitive regions

  • Work with the underwriters to build out new reports and tools, supporting them at the point of underwriting, and improving their visibility on the exposure profile across all perils

  • Review and enhance the current suite of reports, drive the transformation from excel-based reporting to dashboarding

  • Work with Genpact (our outsourced support team) to streamline processes, leveraging them to assist in report production and write commentary

  • Perform proactive portfolio optimisation and other value-add tasks such as, supporting Senior Analysts in developing and maintaining tools to aid underwriting decision making; identify patterns and potential anomalies within data; assess and project risk exposure; supporting coordination of event response; and support on project work/ initiatives as required (including support to Reinsurance)

Strategy, Reporting and Governance

  • Undertake internal and external reporting activities for submissions

  • Assist Senior Analysts in the design and implementation of risk management strategies, ensuring alignment with business goals

  • Support governance activities, including assisting Senior Analysts in gathering information for decision focus

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Conduct role in accordance with the Company’s Business Ethics policy and all regulated entities as appropriate

  • Assist with ensuring that the portfolio and the risks underwritten are compliant with all the relevant risk, regulatory and legal requirements, and are aligned to business goals.

What you’ll need

For this particular role there are some important qualifications and experience we need you to have. These include:

  • Experience working in a Management Information centric role is desirable but will consider a graduate with a suitable technical background

  • Experience using PowerBI or other dashboarding tools is essential

  • Experience using data to support hypotheses, experience interacting with databases and data manipulation using code

  • Coding experience in SQL highly desirable, and skills in R and Python would be useful

  • Experience in geospatial analytics, tools such as GIS desirable

  • Ability to extract insights from data, display those insights, and present the information to someone unfamiliar with the data

  • Good communicator who is able to interact with underwriters

  • Teamwork and relationship building skills
