Do you want to develop your technical expertise, project management confidence, and client-facing skills while working alongside some of the industry’s most respected Principal Consultants? Are you looking for a role that can flex to your interests/skill set, whether you prefer desk-based analysis, field surveys, or a mix to suit your needs?
We’re looking for a Senior Consultant – Hydroecology to join our growing Water Science team. This is a rare opportunity to develop your expertise and leadership under the guidance of APEM’s established Principals—making this ideal for someone early in their senior career or a confident Consultant ready to progress.
This role offers flexibility: if you love being outdoors, survey work can form a significant part of your role (up to 50% during survey season). If you prefer a desk-based, data-driven focus there’s room for that too. Either way, you’ll be part of a collaborative, expert team delivering high-quality environmental assessments and shaping meaningful outcomes for our water industry clients.
You’ll have the chance to work on projects driven by the Water Framework Directive and Habitats Directive—helping regulators, water companies, and developers solve complex environmental challenges.
To Be Successful In This Role, You’ll Need
- A relevant BSc or MSc, plus 3+ years’ professional experience in freshwater environmental work
- Strong data analysis and interpretation skills across macroinvertebrates, macrophytes and/or diatoms
- A flair for clear, insightful reporting and communication
- A growing confidence in project management—with the ambition to soon lead your own projects
- Practical experience of freshwater ecology survey methods and fieldwork with the option to tailor your focus towards either field or desk-based work
- A collaborative mindset, able to work across disciplines and engage confidently with clients and stakeholders
- Excellent attention to detail and numerical skills
- The ability to deliver high-quality work to time and budget
Desirable (but Not Essential)
- Experience mentoring junior staff
- Familiarity with tender writing or client proposals
- A valid UK driving licence
- GIS capability (ArcGIS/QGIS)
- Membership of a relevant professional body (or working towards it)
