Applications are invited for a 5 PA consultant post in the Paediatric Infectious Diseases Unit based at St. George\’s Hospital. The Paediatric Infectious Diseases Unit provides a regional PID service to the old South West Thames region. The work of the PIDU includes care of PID inpatient children as well as an outpatient service for children with immunodeficiency and infectious diseases conditions. Specialist services are provided for HIV, primary immunodeficiencies, congenital infections and TB and include regular multidisciplinary meetings.
St. George\’s is a large teaching hospital affiliated with St. George\’s University of London Medical School. It is a major centre for clinical care, teaching and research. Children\’s services provide local and tertiary Paediatric services and the PID team work closely with specialist Paediatric services including surgery, PICU, neurology, genetics, respiratory, ophthalmology, ENT, plastic surgery, endocrinology, gastroenterology, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, radiology, metabolic diseases and Newborn Services.

Main duties of the job
Outpatient clinics

  • Lead outpatient clinics in paediatric immunology (including PID, autoinflammatory, and immune dysregulation disorders) and vaccinology
  • Engage in joint multidisciplinary clinics (e.g. respiratory).
  • Participate in the immunoglobulin home therapy and SCID programme
  • Act as a clinical lead for vaccination advice and post-exposure prophylaxis in complex patients
  • Participate in the fortnightly immunology MDT and weekly complex infection MDT.

Out of hours work and on call
The out of hours Paediatric Infectious Diseases service is a 24 hour/7 day a week responsibility while acting as the attending Paediatric Infectious Diseases Consultant.
Management responsibility
The postholder is expected to be involved with teaching junior paediatric staff in the morning tutorials, case presentations and the Paediatric Grand Round.

Job responsibilities
This is a Clinical substantive post; 5 programmed activities will be designated for clinical work.
The post holder will provide 8 weeks of consultant service for the Paediatric infectious diseases ward per year. During these attending weeks, they will do daily ward rounds, daily board rounds and review all newly admitted patients under the Paediatric Infectious Diseases team or under shared care with other teams each day. Furthermore, patients attending the ward either for review within POPAT (paediatric Outpatient Parenteral Therapy) or as emergency review for POSCU (Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit), HIV, congenital infections or TB etc will be assessed. During the attending week, the consultant is on call 24/7 and can be contacted via the switchboard.
The postholder will contribute to the inpatient and outpatient management of children with suspected or confirmed immunodeficiencies, working as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes immunology nurses, microbiologists, pharmacists, and other specialist healthcare professionals. There will be an expectation to participate in the delivery of immunoglobulin services, SCID screening (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency), vaccination advice, and the development and accreditation of immunology services.
