Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS)

This full-time post is available for two years from 1 October 2025 to support the work of Dr Chiara Meccariello in the Department of Classics, Ancient History, Religion and Theology.

The post

You will join the research team of the project Education in Graeco-Roman Egypt: An Intercultural Approach (EduGRE), directed by Dr Chiara Meccariello and funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant. The project aims to collate and analyze school artifacts from Graeco-Roman Egypt, including Egyptian, Greek, and Latin materials, to understand education in its Egyptian context and explore cultural interactions.

You will collaborate on creating an online platform hosting editions of papyri and related materials in Greek, Latin, Demotic, and Coptic, along with images and 3D reconstructions. Your responsibilities include populating the platform with editions of papyri, ostraca, and tablets, producing original research on ancient education, especially regarding Egyptian and Graeco-Egyptian interactions, and participating in project events.

About you

You will:

  • Hold a relevant PhD (or nearing completion) in Egyptology, Classics, Ancient History, or a related field.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in Papyrology and related research methods.
  • Be proficient in Demotic and experienced with ancient sources like papyri and artifacts.
