Job Description:

University Hospitals, Crosshouse and Ayr are large district general hospitals based in Ayrshire, central Scotland. Crosshouse is situated 35 minutes south of Glasgow, and Ayr a further 19 miles south. The total catchment population is around 375,000. We wish to appoint Clinical Development Fellows within the department of medicine at both hospital sites. The posts will commence on 6 August 2025.
Applications are invited from doctors for the position of CDF in Medicine in NHS Ayrshire and Arran who, by 6 August 2025, will have successfully completed Foundation Year 2 training. This post would also be suitable for candidates who have completed the UK Internal Medicine or Core Medical Training Programme or its equivalent and are seeking Higher Specialist Training.
The aim of this post is to provide development opportunities for the post-holders, supporting key service areas related to clinical care by a trained doctor workforce. The post offers experience in managing acutely unwell medical patients and developing procedural skills. Although not recognized for training, the post is structured to help further medical careers.
This post is likely to appeal to applicants:
- Wishing to re-enter training at IMT1 level. This will provide valuable opportunities to build your CV for a competitive CMT1 application.
- Seeking to complete an alternative certificate of completion of competencies. This will offer experience in assessing and managing acutely unwell patients, with opportunities in medical HDU and secondment to critical care.
- Aiming to gain further experience in medical specialties and prepare for MRCP examinations. The medical team supports candidates through PACES/MRCP exams, with extensive learning opportunities across medical specialties at Ayr and Crosshouse hospitals.
There will be regular opportunities to develop procedural skills. Participation in departmental quality improvement, audit, and research work is encouraged to strengthen your CV. The post offers excellent experience for those applying to medical specialties.
Within service constraints, the job will be tailored to your needs, likely involving rotations through two or three medical specialties.
During the appointment, post-holders will have at least 4 hours weekly for development and access to a £1250 study budget (pro-rata) to support career goals.
A 40% pay banding supplement will recognize contribution to out-of-hours work. The core salary ranges from £45,504 to £71,550 per annum. These posts are not recognized for national training. Applicants must hold Full GMC Registration with a current Licence to Practice by the appointment date and have at least 12 months of paid NHS experience.
