About the Role

Our world-leading department are seeking an experienced Scientist to develop some of the most innovative uses of ultra-precise measurements over optical fibre links.

This permanent, full-time position comes with a generous salary and benefits package.

You’ll enjoy collaborating with prominent Scientists and Engineers to conceive, design, build state-of-the-art ultra-stable setups to perform innovative tests on optical fibre systems and links.

You’ll enjoy sharing responsibility for the development of research on applications of ultra-stable interferometry for a range of scientific and societal applications; such as

1. Earthquake and tsunami detection using seafloor cables

2. Ocean signal monitoring such as currents and tides

3. Distant atomic optical clock comparison over fibre links, including over intercontinental distances

4. Advanced laser stabilisation techniques

NPL has pioneered sensing techniques for the using the existing undersea network of optical fibres and is looking at expanding the knowledge and applications of these techniques.

This role provides exciting opportunities to publish your work in high-impact academic journals and present it at prestigious international conferences, contributing to a rapidly growing field of research.

About You

Reporting to a Senior Scientist, you’ll enjoy developing applications of ultra-stable interferometry – from the dissemination of ultra-stable and ultra-accurate signals, to detecting earthquakes with seafloor optical cables.

To be successful in this role, you will have the following skills, experience, and qualifications:

Essential:

  • Demonstrable laboratory experience – planning, designing and running optical experiments with the ability to identify problems, then propose and implement solutions. Experience with fibre optics.
  • Practical and recent experience with laboratory electronics
  • A PhD in a photonics-related subject (such as Fibre Optics, Optical Fibre Sensing, Laser Stabilisation, etc.) or equivalent experience. We may also consider strong candidates with a BSc in a relevant area (such as Physics or Engineering)
  • Proven experience coding for experiment control and data analysis using one or more of these languages: LabVIEW, Python, or Mathematica
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts
  • Team player with a proactive, never-fail attitude in the face of ambiguous situations
  • Desirable:

  • Practical knowledge of feedback systems (PID controls)
  • Knowledge of frequency metrology concepts (frequency stability, Allan deviation, phase noise, etc…)
  • OFDR / OTDR knowledge
  • We actively recruit citizens of all backgrounds, but the nature of our work in specific departments means that nationality, residency and security requirements can be more tightly defined than others. You will be asked about this throughout the recruitment process. To work at NPL, you will need to obtain BPSS security clearance.
