Maintenance Shift Technician – Mechanical Bias Position

To work as part of an in‑house maintenance shift team to provide a total planned and reactive maintenance service. The candidate will be responsible for delivering Trust‑wide service in accordance with the duties and responsibilities given below.

Shift Pattern

2 on / 3 off – 2 on rotating shift pattern (days/nights). 37.5 hrs per week based on a 4‑week period.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform unsupervised work, including demanding and non‑routine activities.
  • Test and fault‑find on all engineering plant and equipment throughout the Hospital (out of hours and unsupervised).
  • Act as the ‘Competent & Appointed Person’ for the Trust in safe operation and maintenance of boiler and other plant and systems.
  • Under own initiative undertake maintenance and repairs as directed, ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards and procedures.
  • Carry Trust communication devices (pager, two‑way radio, mobile phone) to facilitate immediate response to emergency situations.
  • Provide first‑line response to maintain clinical services and undertake ‘first‑time fix’ or temporary measures to minimise disruption.
  • Respond to urgent situations such as lift entrapment, fire alarm calls, etc.
  • Issue work permits to directly employed staff and contractors.
  • Supervise contractors on site outside normal working hours.
  • Prioritise own day‑to‑day duties to ensure safe and efficient operation of plant.
  • Diagnose and repair faults in engineering, electrical and plumbing installations, plant and equipment, and pass on knowledge to others.
  • Update and maintain records for all major repairs, logbooks and Works Orders.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance (PPM) and reactive work across site as required.
  • Carry out building surveys, inspections and advise on material, equipment and systems.
  • Highlight Health & Safety issues relating to building, mechanical control and electrical issues.
  • Investigate and test fire alarm and security systems.
  • Liaise with external contractors and suppliers.
  • Support company projects as required.
  • Supervise maintenance assistants, apprentices, contractors and provide practical training.
  • Perform other duties as required by the Company.
  • Maintain own health and safety and that of colleagues in accordance with company policy.
  • Anticipate and act on potential hazards by initiating remedial measures.
  • Comply with regulations associated with work being carried out.
  • Complete any compulsory training for the role.
  • Ensure correct PPE is always worn.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and orally, and be electronically literate.
  • Build relationships and support personnel across the Trust.
  • Pay attention to detail to ensure works are completed to a high standard.
  • Plan, prioritise and schedule own workload with minimal supervision.
  • Provide practical training and mentorship to new staff.
  • Use Work Management System and update maintenance records.
  • Carry out audits and surveys as required.
  • Perform significant physical lifting (exceeding 15 kg) throughout a shift.
  • Maintain high levels of concentration, manage emotional response in emergency situations.
  • Show empathy towards service users and manage contact with distressed or angry staff and users.
  • Work flexibly and adapt to a clinical environment, often in highly unpleasant settings.
  • Participate in annual performance appraisal and review of the job description.

Key Skills & Qualifications

  • City & Guilds Level 3 or NVQ Level 3 in Electrical and/or Mechanical Services.
  • Previous experience in a multi‑skilled maintenance position with core skills in either Electrical or Mechanical Services.
  • Experience in a Competent Person (CP) role (e.g., Low Voltage CP (HTM 06), Medical Gases CP (HTM 02), HVAC CP (HTM 03)).
  • Experience in a shift technician role within a complex environment (e.g., Healthcare).
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team.
  • Good problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to assist with emergency tasks such as fire alarms, heating failures, blocked drains and gritting of roads.
  • Ability to make areas safe following patient damage.
  • Physically fit to lift and carry as required.
  • Excellent customer service skills; friendly and approachable.

Health & Safety

Responsible for own health and safety and that of colleagues, in accordance with the company’s Health and Safety policy. Anticipate and act on potential hazards, comply with all regulations and wear appropriate PPE at all times.

Communication

Communicate effectively in writing and orally, and be electronically literate. Liaise closely with other departments and staff within the team. Build relationships across the Trust, including clinical staff, contractors, patients, clients, relatives and carers.

Planning & Organisational Skills

Plan, prioritise and schedule own workload with minimal supervision; coordinate work of contractors and provide cover for other maintenance technicians during absences.

Patient/Client Interaction

Provide non‑clinical advice and maintain patient/client interaction as part of daily duties.

Policy, Procedure & Development

Follow policies and procedures and work collaboratively as part of an integrated team. Suggest improvements to enhance efficiency and productivity. Participate in formal and informal training, including residential courses to develop multi‑skilled practices.

Financial & Physical Resources

Responsible for purchasing parts for day‑to‑day maintenance functions, taking reasonable care of Trust assets and minimizing financial loss via cost‑efficient repair and maintenance.

Staff Development

Provide practical training, instruction and professional advice to new staff; act as mentor/trainer and evaluate works carried out.

Information Management

Comply with Health & Safety Regulations, NHS Regulations, HTM, HMN guidelines and customer requirements. Complete CAFM system entries and maintain accurate maintenance records.

Research & Development

Carry out audits and surveys as required.

Physical Effort

Lifting in excess of 15 kg on a daily basis numerous times during a shift; continuous use of Trust mobile phone, pager and radio.

Mental Effort

Maintain high levels of concentration for prolonged periods; manage frequent emergency interruptions.

Emotional Effort

Show empathy towards service users and manage contact with distressed or angry individuals.

Working Conditions

Work flexibly, adapt to a clinical environment, and handle potentially distressing circumstances including fighting, self‑harm or personal attacks.

Participate in annual performance appraisal and review of the job description. Contribute to a respectful, valued and dignified working environment.
