Principal Structural Engineer
Location: Northallerton or Durham or Otley (Hybrid Working)
Salary: £60,000 per annum
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and proactive Principal Structural Engineer to join a well-established multidisciplinary design team comprising Architects, Civil Engineers, Building Surveyors, M&E Engineers, and Quantity Surveyors. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in delivering innovative structural solutions for a growing portfolio of public and private sector clients.
This role offers hybrid working flexibility, collaborative project environments, and opportunities to lead challenging structural schemes from concept to completion.

Key Responsibilities for Principal Structural Engineer

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to produce rational, buildable designs
  • Lead technical development of superstructure and substructure solutions across diverse sites
  • Prepare and deliver detailed design packages for review and construction
  • Respond to contractor queries, review fabrication details, and carry out site visits
  • Ensure designs comply with CDM regulations and health & safety requirements
  • Undertake technical reviews, condition surveys, and remediation strategies
  • Communicate clearly with clients to shape and understand project briefs
  • Lead projects, support team members, and contribute to continuous service improvement

Essential Skills & Qualifications for Principal Structural Engineer

  • Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or equivalent
  • Minimum of 8 years post-qualification experience in an engineering consultancy
  • Strong technical proficiency with hand calculations, AutoCAD, TEDDS, Tekla Structural Designer (or equivalent software)
  • Excellent working knowledge of UK and European design codes (steel, concrete, masonry, timber)
  • Capability to conduct independent structural surveys and produce condition reports
  • Effective communicator with experience liaising directly with clients and project stakeholders
  • Able to manage project delivery, budgets, and mentor junior engineers
  • Full UK driving license
  • Strong command of Microsoft Word and Excel
