CAF is committed to building a team that reflects the diverse communities we serve and we welcome all applicants, especially those with a keen interest in electrical engineering. ⚡ What You’ll Be Doing As an Electrically biased Test Engineering Apprentice, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers and technicians testing and commissioning brand-new, purpose-built rail vehicles. Your work will directly influence their safety and performance. You will: Bring designs to reality by completing in-depth fault finding and testing, using testing equipment. Ensure safety by completing essential, service testing to Rolling Stock units. Problem-solve by identifying and diagnosing electrical faults on the units, to ensure they can go into service. Be hands-on in maintaining your equipment and keeping the workspace clean and well-organized. Drive excellence by following all safety and quality procedures and completing all relevant records—both manually and digitally. This programme is designed to develop your skills in practical diagnostics and high-voltage safety, helping you become a fully qualified technician with an electrical specialism. Training & Qualifications A 3-year Level 4 HNC apprenticeship with an electrical bias. 4 days per week on-site in Newport, 1 day per week in college. Training aligned with national frameworks focused on electrical, electronic and rail safety standards. What Happens Next? Upon completion, you’ll have the opportunity to take on a permanent role with CAF—as a Test Technician.  CAF are keen to ensure their apprentices continue to grow with the business, developing careers that make a real impact. Ideal candidates will be: Enthusiastic about applying electrical knowledge to real-world challenges Eager to learn and adapt Good communicators and team players Passionate about solving problems and working with tools Reliable, organised, and proactive Minimum Requirements: Completion of at least one year of Level 3 Engineering—electrical units preferred GCSE pass in Maths and English Desirable: GCSE in Physics or Engineering Science Confidence using IT tools (e.g. Microsoft Office, tablets, cloud-based systems) Willing & able to attend a recruitment open day 29/07/2025 and complete pre-employment medical & drug/alcohol screening.
