Job purpose
Under the general direction of the Manager and senior staff, the Nursery Assistant role is to work as part of a team to deliver a high standard of care which meets the individual needs of the children. To make and maintain positive relationships with the children and to safely meet the physical care and management needs of children. All staff support the services main purpose of encouraging and enabling children to develop behaviourally, educationally and emotionally, and to promote a culture of openness and trust.
Responsibilities
- Provide high quality care and education for all children and support for families.
- Observe and monitor children’s development and contribute to reports of their progress.
- Liaise with and provide professional advice to parents, social workers and health visitors.

- Maintain client confidentiality.
- Liaise with local primary schools and prepare reports that will support the child’s transition into school.
- Report any injury or accident, ensuring health and safety of the individual is maintained.
- Understand and operate the policies and procedures for the administration of medication, including accurately recording and verifying drug sheets.
- Report any safeguarding concerns and follow Local Safeguarding Children Board Procedures.
- Support student placements and help prepare and present accurate reports to the Manager and/or college tutors.
- Provide educational visits for children and families, observing Health and Safety policies and making risk assessments as required.
- Support parents and families in the admission and transition of their children.
- Take responsibility for a group of children during any building evacuation.
- Participate in training and development activities to ensure up-to-date knowledge and skills.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to the post as required by the Service.
- Comply with Leeds City Council policies, procedures and staff instructions, including Health and Safety.
- Promote Leeds City Council\’s Equal Opportunities policies and work in an anti-oppressive manner.
Qualifications
Essential requirement: minimum of a relevant Level 2 qualification as defined by the Sector Skills Council for Childcare/ CWDC. See GOV.UK guidance for early-years qualifications. Note: degrees recognised by CWDC may be included if Early Years Professional Status is achieved.
Knowledge, Experience, and Skills
- GCSE Maths and English or equivalent; commitment to achieve if not present within 2 years; current Paediatric First Aid or commitment to achieve within 3 months as required by EYFS framework.
- Knowledge of current legislation and guidance relating to Sure Start Children’s Centres, EYFS, Childcare Act, Ofsted framework, SEN Code of Practice, and safeguarding.
- Experience of working with children and/or families; experience in a nursery or childcare environment; ability to plan and organise play experiences; ability to write reports and plans documenting children’s learning, development and wellbeing.
- Ability to safeguard children, work with parents and carers, and support children with special educational needs in an inclusive setting.
- Ability to complete risk assessments and use ICT (Word/Excel).
- Flexible approach to working hours and ability to change shift patterns as required.
