The Service
Gwent N-gage is a young person’s drug and alcohol service that provides free, confidential support and information to any young person under 18. This extends to any 18–21-year-old requiring support with a transition to adult drug/alcohol services. The service also offers drug and alcohol consultancy, support and training to professionals working with young people within Gwent.
Gwent Drug and Alcohol Family Service (GDAFS) provides support, information and advice to any family member or friend affected by another person’s (loved ones) substance use. This support is available for young people and adults of any age.
Both Barod services are provided in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory, and professional manner and in a way that demonstrates courtesy and respect for individuals using substances, and sensitivity to their unique personal situations and experiences.
Role Purpose
The role of Team Leader is to provide direct line management to team members to ensure the effective delivery of the N-gage service model. The team leader will also offer wider support to the GDAFS service.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Providing line management and regular supervision and appraisal to team members and ensure the delivery of quality services.
- Fostering and sustaining good working relationships with stakeholders.
- Providing consultation and advice to staff who deliver services and interventions across Tiers 1 to 3.
- Contributing to the establishment of protocols and integrated care pathways in N-gage and to provide advice on care pathways to partner agencies.
- Encouraging and support supervisees to reflect on and develop their practice.
- Providing support and guidance with regard to practice issues to young person’s workers.
- Supporting the service manager with reviewing service delivery, report writing and embedding good practice
- Chairing joint allocation meetings and relevant internal team meetings.
- Network and develop strong relationships with partnering agencies and other local services to ensure clarity on N-gage referral pathways and support available.
- Engage in and encourage the use of Gwent N-gage social media platforms
- Support and oversee the delivery of regular, needs-led N-gage outreach campaigns in partnership with Barod’s campaigns and communications lead
- Enter and retrieve data onto/from the N-gage case management system and use the system effectively to inform work with young people in line with data protection policies and procedures.
- Retain and maintain all information (paper and electronic) in line with service level agreed guidelines and statutory protocols, such as GDPR.
- Reach out and liaise with key communities across Gwent (e.g. the travelling, BAME, LGBTQ+, young disabled and young carers communities), to ensure equity and equality of access to our service; working towards removing barriers to harm reduction, support and information
- Actively influence and support co-production and service user involvement in shaping service provision.
- To assess and contribute towards the safeguarding and wellbeing of children and adults within the statutory obligations of the Social Services Health and Wellbeing Act in line with N-gage/Barod safeguarding policies and procedures.
- To undertake any administrative function related to the role to a high standard, in a competent and timely fashion.

Qualifications and training
Line Management Training or Qualification to ILM 3 or equivalent, or a willingness to work towards.
GCSE English Literature or Language grade C or above (equivalent)
Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (or equivalent)
Role-related knowledge, experience and skills
Experience/understanding of providing line management and regular supervision and appraisal to team members.
Experience/understanding of chairing meetings and leading on projects/change.
Experience/understanding of fostering and sustaining good working relationships with all stakeholders.
Experience of delivering services that are trauma and ACE informed.
Understanding the barriers, pathways and opportunities available for young people.
Experience/understanding of maintaining the safeguarding and wellbeing of children and adults within the statutory obligations of the Social Services Health and Wellbeing Act in line with Barod Safeguarding policies and procedures.
Ability to work effectively with people regardless of their ethnic, cultural, social backgrounds, their gender, age, religious belief, disability and sexual orientation.
The ability to compile, maintain and complete accurate written records, including data capture and the use of case management systems.
Experience/Understanding of a range of substance use interventions.
Good IT skills: competency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Teams, Excel, Powerpoint, Canva.
Knowledge of coaching techniques.
Knowledge of the Welsh Governments Delivery Plan.
Experience/understanding of contributing to the establishment of protocols and procedures.
Ability to problem solve, work under own initiative and able to work under pressure.

Possesses a ‘can do’, positive attitude.
Full, current driving licence and use of a car which is insured for business use is an essential requirement of this role.
Ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh.
