Radiology Physics is part of the Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering. The section has close working relationships with colleagues in Nuclear Medicine, Kent and Medway Communication and Assistive Technology (KM CAT) service and Medical Devices Governance team (MDGT). The department has links with local universities. We are a diverse, vibrant and dynamic department, well-integrated into the Trust and with representation and support at Care Group level.

We provide scientific, technical and regulatory support to X‑ray, ultrasound and laser facilities across the Trust and the NHSBSP in East Kent.

Training and development are actively encouraged and supported.

We are based in modern, air‑conditioned accommodation with up‑to‑date desktop IT and video‑conferencing facilities, a training room and kitchen area.

Main duties of the job

This role involves carrying out scientific quality control, performance assessments, and safety checks on a wide range of diagnostic imaging equipment, including X‑ray and ultrasound systems. It includes supporting equipment commissioning, providing technical reports and scientific advice, contributing to radiation safety practices, and assisting in staff training. The post also supports departmental quality assurance through accurate record‑keeping, equipment management, software and data work, and participation in health and safety and ISO9001:2015 compliance activities.

Job responsibilities

Carry out scientific quality control and performance assessments on a wide range of diagnostic X‑ray and ultrasound imaging systems using associated test and measuring equipment. Radiological equipment includes digital imaging, computed tomography (CT), interventional and cardiac imaging, mammography and dental imaging.

Carry out, (under supervision where applicable) commissioning, acceptance testing and critical examination of new X‑ray and ultrasound equipment.

Carry out and assess the performance of ultrasound scanners and provide training and advice on optimisation.

To assist with equipment quality control and performance assessments on other non‑ionising imaging equipment as required.

5 Provide written reports and advice to radiology managers, radiographers, radiologists and others. Liaise with manufacturers representatives where necessary.

To assist in the provision of scientific advice to users of medical imaging equipment, within own scope of practice.

To participate in the teaching of other groups of professionals, (e.g. non‑medical referrers, practitioners, operators, RPSs) about issues relating to radiation safety.

To assist with the personal dose monitoring service for all Trust staff occupationally exposed to ionising radiation and to review personal radiation monitoring results, maintaining close links with Radiation Protection Supervisors.

Assist in the training of trainee physicists and technologists.

If required, to act as Radiation Protection Supervisor for the work carried out within Medical Physics.

To maintain safe working practices under the guidance of established protocols, Local Rules, regulations and professional guidelines.

To develop and maintain computerised records, scientific spreadsheets, databases and inventories used by the section; assisting in their validation and full documentation as required by the departments Quality System.

To participate in development of software analysis tools using Microsoft excel.

To respond with the team, under supervision, to emergencies involving radiation.

To work in an efficient, effective and timely manner and to be adaptable to change and comment on procedures or possible service developments.

To assist in the management of test and measurement equipment.

Maintain CPD in accordance with the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT) or if not yet registered, complete a portfolio and undertake training to apply to be on the IPEM Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT) within an agreed scope‑of‑practice.

To participate as required within the Team and wider Department to support the compliance with ISO9001:2015.

To act as an internal auditor as part of an internal audit programme under ISO9001.

Person Specification

Qualification & Training

  • A BSc degree in Physics or closely related subject
  • Registered with IPEM Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT)
  • Registered with Science Council

Skills & Experience

  • Theoretical/practical experience of medical imaging, (especially x‑ray, mammography & ultrasound) equipment.
  • Ability to manage own workload
  • Ability to prioritise own workload
  • Good time management
  • Ability to exercise own initiative when dealing with issues within own area of competence
  • Ability to concentrate for prolonged periods during unpredictable working patterns, particularly when making extensive sets of measurements.

  • Good fundamental computing skills
  • Good manual dexterity to enable precise measurements using sophisticated testing equipment.

  • Support the Department to maintain compliance with Health and Safety requirements.
