Light Duty Mechanic

Department of Public Works Fleet Maintenance Division

Starting at: $29.55/hour

After 3 years $31.37/hour

Per AFSCME* contract

DUTIES Perform automotive and equipment mechanical work at an intermediate level (on vehicles and equipment including trucks, vehicles, tractors, mowers, backhoes, loaders, graders, etc.), vehicle diagnostics, driveability, electrical system troubleshooting, and installation and removal of emergency lighting and radio equipment. Perform general labor and service work and other similar work assignments.

REQUIREMENTS

  • High school (or GED equivalent) or mechanic trade school graduate.
  • Two (2) years current full-time paid experience as an automotive light-medium truck and off-road equipment mechanic/technician.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered for this position.
  • Knowledge of gasoline and diesel equipment operation principles and applicable mechanical repair methods.
  • Must have at the time of application, and maintain, a valid Michigan driver license with a good driving record (based on City of Troy standards).
  • Before initial probation period is complete applicant must obtain a CDL, including air brakes (A) and tanker (N) endorsement and Medical Card, as required by the State of Michigan and a State of Michigan Master Mechanic in Automobile/Light Truck Certification.
  • Applicants must meet LEIN (Law Enforcement Information Network) security standards in order to have access to the Police Department.
  • As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must pass pre-employment physical.

PREFERENCES

  • Four (4) years recent experience as an automotive light-medium truck and off-road equipment mechanic/technician service.
  • Michigan Master Mechanic in Automobile/Light Truck and Master ASE Automobile Technician certifications; applicants with relevant certifications may be considered before those without. Applicant must provide copy of certification(s) or wallet certificate with application.
  • Training in vehicle/equipment maintenance from a vocational or trade school.
  • Current CDL (Commercial Driver\’s License).

EVALUATION PROCESS will consist of:

50% Demonstration & 50% Interview – Applicants must receive at least a score of 70 on each portion be placed on the eligible list.

* Current ASE Master Automotive Technician Certification will waive demonstration requirement – interview will be weighted 100%.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

  • Applicants must receive at least a score of 70 on the interview to be placed on the eligible list.
  • Successful applicant to be appointed within eight (8) weeks of being awarded the position.
  • Persons who have applied for and failed the evaluation for this classification in this division, or a lower AFSCME classification within the same division, may not apply under this announcement if the failure was within six (6) months of the closing date of this announcement.
  • Vacancy will be filled pursuant to Article 22 Posting of Vacancy in the current AFSCME collective bargaining agreement.

HOURS Current shift is Monday – Friday, 4:00 pm – 12:30 am. Overtime is required at times; employees should work at least 50% of offered overtime. Pursuant to Article 18 shift/schedule changes between first and second shift will be granted on the basis of seniority, within the same job classification, at the pay period immediately following November 1st and April 1st each year.
