The Municipal Group of Companies, based in Bedford Nova Scotia, is a large, diversified organization engaged in all major aspects of the heavy civil construction, mining and environmental services within the Atlantic Provinces. We are currently seeking a Health and Safety Advisor to join our safety department based out of our Bedford, NS office. This role requires significant travel across the province.

Job Summary:

The Health & Safety Advisor ensures the safe operation of the facilities, project sites, and day to day activities of The Municipal Group of Companies and its affiliates. The Health & Safety Advisor is to know, advise, mentor and coach on the Organization’s safety programs, safety policies, company rules, and the provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act as applicable to the Organization’s operation. Occasionally coordinate with Provincial OH&S and company clients to review and discuss health and safety matters.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports implementation of the Corporate Health & Safety Management System (HSMS) and promotes continual improvement within area of responsibility.
  • Supports Operations Managers, Supervisors, and employees through coaching, mentoring and guidance of all aspects of the corporate health and safety management system and regulatory requirements.
  • Aids in the development and delivery of health and safety initiatives and measures the effectiveness of health and safety initiatives that influence performance and meet corporate expectations.
  • Provides clear and actionable direction and communication to the Operation Management, Supervisors and employees as it pertains to health and safety.
  • Participates in the identification and completion of health and safety performance targets and objectives at an operational area level.
  • Develop and maintain thorough, current knowledge of all applicable regulations and legislation for jurisdiction.
  • Travel to worksites within area of responsibility to ensure operational conformance.
  • Complete health and safety inspections and reporting within their area of responsibility to ensure consistency with Corporate and regulatory standards and provide guidance and leadership on areas of potential compliance vulnerability including:
    • Risk Management
    • Training & Competency
    • Emergency Response
    • Incident Management & Investigation
    • Health & Safety metrics and reporting
  • Complete and/or participate in health and safety audits (COR) to maintain company letters of good standing as required.
  • Develop injury and incident prevention strategies for their area of responsibility alongside Operations based on trending and analysis.
  • Promote open discussion of safety concerns/issues, best practices, and review accidents/incidents/near misses to identify and develop corrective actions.
  • Visit work sites on a regular basis to maintain a “safety presence” with employees.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, and Experience:

  • 3-5 years’ experience in a safety role or a similar type role is a requirement
  • Professional Safety designation or willingness to work towards such a designation is also required;
  • Knowledge and use of applicable Legislation;
  • Professional written and oral communication skills and effective listening skills. Must utilize strong presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Safety Software System (e.g. eCompliance and Outlook);
  • Class 5 License is required;
  • Tactful and mature demeanor with well developed interpersonal skills including the ability to work well with diverse personalities.
