Assistant General Counsel, Privacy (London) The Assistant General Counsel Privacy position is part of our global privacy function and this role will be based in our London, England office. The lawyer in this role will assist with our global privacy function initiatives such as privacy awareness, accountability, and compliance, and will also directly support the business on compliance with current and developing rules and regulations involving privacy and data protection. This attorney will also serve as the Data Protection Officer. Foster a data protection culture within the organization and help to develop, implement, and maintain essential elements of Dow Jones’s privacy program, such as the data subjects’ rights response process, data protection impact assessments (DPIAs), data protection by design and by default, records of processing activities, privacy awareness training, and notification and communication of data breaches. As the Data Protection Officer, serve as the primary contact point for the data protection authorities, and consult as needed with executives or data protection authorities on issues relating to processing. Monitor and track current and emerging data protection regulations and regulatory requirements; and translate legal terms into business requirements, guidance and advice. Identify and escalate data protection risks and issues as needed. Collaborate with internal stakeholders in the review of new products, services and initiatives, often involving novel technologies, to ensure compliance with data protection laws. Confirm that sound protocols are in place to mitigate privacy risks unique to such technologies. Maintain updated knowledge of legal and regulatory developments that are relevant to the business, including in direct marketing and online privacy. Advise on and negotiate privacy and data protection terms in commercial contracts with business partners and vendors, including data processing agreements and data transfer agreements; Attend regular/ongoing privacy training; provide ad hoc privacy training to internal stakeholders. At least 8-10+ years PQE qualified lawyer with a license to practice in England and Wales, with significant privacy compliance experience full-time in-house or at a law firm (or combination) is required. Experience navigating or operating within global data protection laws and requirements, including extensive knowledge of the details and practical application of data protection legislation including in the UK and throughout Europe. You have demonstrated experience communicating effectively with the highest levels of management within the organization and external stakeholders to provide advice regarding data protection questions, risks, contract terms, and issues. Ability to communicate effectively with data subjects, data protection authorities, works councils, and other controllers and processors across national boundaries and cultures. Ability to simultaneously manage workloads, multiple demands and shifting priorities within a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment; Experience implementing data protection policies, procedures, and training materials, and promoting a culture of data protection compliance across business functions. Curiosity to learn about emerging privacy laws, new technologies and areas of risk. Strong negotiation skills and strong commercial awareness and analytical skills, and ability to develop innovative and pragmatic approaches to privacy and security issues in support of business initiatives. Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational and follow-up skills and Possess integrity, professional ethics, and sound judgement in managing risks. A second language (ideally French, German, Italian, or Spanish) is advantageous but not required. This position is based in London, with the potential for regional/EU and US travel.
