Our purpose is to improve society by considering social outcomes in everything we do, relentlessly focusing on excellence and digital innovation, transforming our clients’ businesses, our communities and employee opportunities. A fundamental part of this is respecting each person’s differences and striving to meet their needs.

About Thebusinessunit: We help conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators around the globe. From preparing the business case and advising on related issues—such as revenue, procurement, and environmental legislation—to delivering the completed infrastructure and helping maintain it. Our planning, engineering, environmental and management skills cover the whole project cycle. We play a major role in developing and delivering the Global Transport Sector Strategy.

Overview Of Role

This is an opportunity for an experienced, qualified and enthusiastic Project Management professional to join our Transport and Mobility Solutions team supporting the delivery of transport planning and infrastructure projects for a range of clients across the UK. As the Project Manager, you will be part of the project senior leadership team with a primary focus on overall technical quality, safety, risk, change control, programme, resource allocation and commercial performance. You will work with the wider team developing and delivering projects from inception to handover and completion. This could include management of Design and Build or contractor-led projects from tendering and contract negotiation and administration, to detailed design and construction site services, although you may be required to work on other highway projects as required.

Your role will require you to liaise closely with multiple stakeholders, coordinate multi-disciplinary design teams, draft and manage the production of reports and tender documents, monitor cost and schedule, and manage Health and Safety and Quality Assurance aspects of projects. You will be confident in contributing to a technical team, as well as a key member of a project team, liaising directly with the client, project sponsors and key stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for project delivery with focus on technical quality, safety, risk management, change control, schedule, resources, and commercial performance.
  • Lead and coordinate multi-disciplinary design teams; liaise with clients, sponsors, and stakeholders.
  • Draft and manage reports and tender documents; monitor cost and schedule; manage Health and Safety and Quality Assurance aspects.
  • Take part in tendering and contract negotiation and administration; manage Design and Build or contractor‑led projects as required.
  • Support procurement activities and maintain effective client relationships; ensure alignment with contractual requirements (including NEC).
  • Ensure compliance with risk management processes and maintain program governance.

Qualifications

  • Essential: Full awareness of Health & Safety legislation and its application to design and construction within the highways sector; ability to deliver in a demanding design and build environment; strong relationship skills to resolve complex design/construction issues.
  • Experience of working on highway/transport infrastructure design projects in a project management or senior management role.
  • Chartered status with a recognised institution or actively working towards it.
  • Experience establishing and developing a project team, delivering overall project success in line with company directives and contractual arrangements (including NEC).
  • Experience establishing tender budgets, monitoring budgets, resolving cost overruns, and identifying cost reduction measures or revenue gains; capable of managing project capital and invoicing.
  • Experience acting as principal contact with client commercial and procurement teams for commercial and contractual aspects.
  • Working knowledge of risk management in project delivery.
  • Willingness to travel to client sites or alternative offices when required.
  • Desirable: Degree in Project Management or Civil Engineering (or related subject).
  • Project Management Qualification or working towards one.
  • Understanding of designer obligations under CDM Regulations.
  • Experience managing projects through lifecycle.
