My client is a UK-based specialist in precision tool design and pattern manufacture, serving industries like plastic packaging, automotive, and aerospace. They design and produce CNC-ready tooling, bespoke mould patterns, and packaging prototypes for leading clients.
The Role
Join as a key member of their technical design team, driving projects from concept through to production-ready CAD models and workshop-ready documentation. You will collaborate closely with clients, project managers, toolmakers, and CNC technicians to deliver high-quality tooling and pattern solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end design: develop concept sketches, detailed 3D models, and 2D drawings using SolidWorks.
- Generate production-ready models, including assemblies and components for CNC machining.
- Create engineering drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and CNC toolpath guidelines.
- Collaborate with project stakeholders for site surveys, component testing, and design iteration.
- Streamline and improve CAD processes - value-engineering, standardisation, and manufacturability.
- Engage in design reviews, ensuring designs meet functional, safety and quality requirements.
- Stay current with tooling and materials technology to offer innovative solutions.
Essential:
- 3+ years hands-on experience using SolidWorks for 3D modelling and technical drawing.
- Strong understanding of CNC machining, manufacturing workflows, and tooling design.
- Proven ability to prepare detailed technical documentation (GD&T, BOMs, workshop drawings).
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for client and team interactions.
Desirable:
- Experience in the plastic packaging, pattern-making, or related sectors.
- Familiar with CAM software or CNC toolpath planning.
- Knowledge of additional CAD packages (e.g. AutoCAD) or Adobe CS tools.
- Previous use of PDM or version control systems.
