Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid.
One of two UK-qualified Probation Officers, you will undertake all offender management tasks. This will include assessing and managing the risk posed by offenders. With lead responsibility for interventions, you will develop partnerships, train and nurture local staff and provide input to the island’s Safeguarding Board on behalf of the Probation Service. You will contribute directly to public protection through your role as Chair of the island’s Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements. You must also deliver interventions to young people who are considered ‘at risk’ of offending through the Youth Diversion Scheme, responding to crises or emergencies, providing guidance, support, and referrals as necessary for those serving sentences within the community. Your training, support and supervision of the Probation Support Officer will be invaluable.
Holding an Honours Degree or Graduate Diploma in Community Justice and Level 5 Diploma in Probation Practice, or a Diploma in Probation Studies; Diploma in Social Work (Probation option); or CQSW (Probation option), you are qualified in RM2000, SARA and ARMS. With substantial post-qualification experience of managing offenders serving custodial and community sentences, you are familiar with evidence-based practice and risk/needs assessment tools. You have managed high risk cases, domestic abusers and sexual offenders and can deliver training.
In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme, you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
