The opportunity has arisen to join an industry leader within the Decarbonisation sector as a Health, Safety & Environmental Manager (HSE). Alternative Heat specialises in designing, offsite prefabrication, modularisation, and onsite installation of prefabricated mechanical and electrical services for decarbonisation projects throughout the UK and Ireland, focusing on mechanical fit-out and supply of packaged mechanical and electrical plantrooms.

With projected growth, we are seeking a proactive HSE Manager to lead all health, safety, and environmental teams across these projects, ensuring compliance, reducing risk, and fostering a culture of safety and wellbeing. The candidate will collaborate with in-house teams during client engagement and all construction stages to establish HSE management arrangements that meet client and legal requirements, ensuring safe onsite delivery of district heating and energy-saving solutions. They will also drive continual improvements, with a focus on behavioural safety, and lead by example to promote a strong safety culture throughout the organisation and projects.

The HSE Manager will be the main client contact for HSE matters, conducting site visits and building relationships, reporting to the Head of HSE, and working closely with project teams, clients, and the wider HSE team to ensure a safe, compliant, and sustainable environment.

What are we expecting from this role?

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in managing HSE functions within the Commercial M&E, Building Services, or Construction sectors, demonstrating the ability to implement and develop robust HSE programs across large-scale projects. They will have extensive experience working with project teams through all phases, including risk assessments, site inspections, compliance monitoring, and incident investigations, and be skilled at influencing stakeholders and fostering a positive safety culture. This role involves collaborating with senior leadership, clients, and project teams to embed HSE considerations into planning and delivery, ensuring compliance and safety throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining HSE policies and procedures aligned with legal and industry standards for decarbonisation projects across the UK and Ireland.
  • Conducting site inspections, risk assessments, and audits to monitor compliance and identify improvement areas.
  • Leading incident investigations and root cause analyses, ensuring corrective actions and continuous improvement.
  • Providing expert HSE advice during all project phases, including design, prefabrication, and installation.
  • Collaborating with HSE officers, operational teams, clients, and subcontractors to promote safe practices and environmental responsibility.
  • Driving HSE training and awareness initiatives to enhance team competency.
  • Monitoring and reporting HSE performance metrics to management and stakeholders.
  • Facilitating client HSE audits and site visits as the primary contact for HSE matters.
  • Supporting the expansion of HSE practices into new regions within Europe.

Team Development and Leadership

  • Recruiting and onboarding qualified HSE Officers to build a competent team.
  • Designing training programs to develop skills, knowledge, and leadership within the team.
  • Mentoring team members, conducting performance reviews, and encouraging professional growth.
  • Managing team resources across multiple projects and sites.
  • Promoting effective communication within the team and with other departments.
  • Setting clear expectations and accountability standards for HSE Officers.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential Criteria:

  • Minimum 5 years' experience as an HSE Manager in construction, mechanical, electrical, or energy sectors.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, standards (e.g., ISO 45001, ISO 14001), and industry best practices.
  • Certifications such as NEBOSH or equivalent environmental qualifications.
  • Experience managing HSE teams and conducting risk assessments, audits, and incident investigations.
  • Excellent communication skills for influencing and engaging stakeholders.
  • Ability to oversee HSE activities across multiple locations and manage priorities effectively.
  • Skills in data analysis and reporting to monitor performance and drive improvements.
  • Ability to foster a positive safety and environmental culture in a fast-growing environment.
