Conestoga is seeking two dedicated Esports Head Coaches to lead our varsity Esports League of Legends and VALORANT teams. In this role, you will be responsible for recruiting, developing, and supporting the performance of student athletes while managing the daily operations of the program. As an ambassador for Conestoga's Esports initiative, you will represent the college within the broader Esports community and foster a culture rooted in sportsmanship, academic achievement, competitive excellence, and professionalism.

The Esports Head Coach supports the competitive season from September to May, working directly with student-athletes in the Esports Hub and the upcoming Esports Arena. Based in Waterloo, the Coach is on-site for match days and training, guiding team development and competitive success with support from administrative staff, operations staff, student services, and recruiting tools. Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. This position will likely operate under a hybrid work arrangement, scheduled Monday to Friday, three to four nights per week from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., including at least one day on-site at the Waterloo campus located at 108 University Avenue East. The Esports Head Coach will be scheduled for up to 24 hours per week with occasional weekend and daytime hours. Travel will be required for LAN events, matches, and team activities.

Responsibilities

  • Program planning: Develop and implement a comprehensive program for your Esports team, including training, practices, games, and athlete development. Ensure alignment of program goals with the mission, vision, and values of the Athletics department.
  • Coaching and athlete development: Plan and deliver high-quality practices, meetings, video analysis sessions, and regular check-ins. Guide, direct, and evaluate athlete performance; enforce discipline and penalties. Foster an inclusive, supportive, and holistic environment for student-athlete growth and well-being. Monitor academic progress and student behaviour, ensuring adherence to college and team expectations.
  • Recruitment and community engagement: Identify and recruit academically strong and talented student-athletes. Collaborate with the Athletics department to design and execute a multi-year recruitment strategy. Support and participate in recruitment events to raise the profile of the program. Build and maintain relationships with alumni, community partners, and potential donors to enhance program visibility and support. Advocate for Condors Esports in the Waterloo Region and provincially, as a leader and educator in collegiate Esports.
  • Administration and compliance: Maintain effective communication and administrative systems among coaches, athletes, Esports, and Facility staff. Ensure compliance with the Esports league, title publishers, and Conestoga policies and procedures. Organize team participation in competitions, tournaments, clinics, and other activities. Coordinate logistics for travel, equipment, and facility use as needed.

Qualifications

  • One-year certificate in Business, Esports Marketing and Event Management, Sport Management, Social Media, or a related field of study.
  • Minimum one year of experience coaching high-performance esports athletes; experience in a post-secondary environment is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge, proficiency, and achievement in League of Legends or VALORANT.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the student-athlete experience.
  • Uphold high ethical standards and model good character.
  • Committed to fair play and representing Conestoga with professionalism.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and implementation of student-athlete recruitment strategies.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a competitive program aligned with academic excellence.
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and administrative capabilities.
  • Motivational and team-building skills to foster a positive team culture.
  • Completion of a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.
  • Access to reliable transportation and the ability to travel to multiple campuses and off-site events.
