As our Deputy Harbour Master based in Cairnryan, you will play a key role in supporting the Regional Harbour Master in the day-to-day management of port operations, ensuring compliance with statutory obligations, and maintaining the highest standards of safety and efficiency. This is a fantastic opportunity for a maritime professional looking for a part-time role with real impact, contributing to the safe and effective running of one of our key ports.

Some of your key responsibilities:

  • Support the Harbour Master in ensuring safe navigation and port operations in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in the management of marine craft operations, including Pilot Boats (where applicable) and other port assets.
  • Contribute to emergency response planning and act as a key contact during marine incidents.
  • Monitor and maintain aids to navigation (AtoNs), issuing Local Notices to Mariners as required.
  • Conduct risk assessments and ensure safe working practices across marine operations.
  • Support training compliance and ensure marine staff have the necessary equipment and communication tools.
  • Assist with conservancy duties, dredging operations, and marine maintenance planning.
  • Provide on-site support during serious marine incidents, including outside of rostered hours, to ensure effective incident management and operational continuity.

You’re a safety-conscious maritime professional with a strong understanding of port operations and marine regulations. You’re proactive, detail-oriented, and able to support a busy operational environment with confidence and professionalism.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of COLREGs and port marine safety codes
  • Experience in marine operations, vessel movements, or port management
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Ability to contribute to emergency planning and incident response
