HSE Recruitment Network are recruiting for an Environmental Advisor to support the central HS&E team across their sites in the Midlands, with the opportunity to represent a UK manufacturing business with a key focus on sustainability and local sourcing for the construction industry. The role will be focused on implementing environmental requirements, planning and conducting audits and driving continuous improvement in the protection of the environment. This role will be working closely with the Sustainability and Energy Manager, as well as site-based Safety, Health and Environmental colleagues, Operational and Plant Managers daily.
Main Responsibilities:
- Support the Company's commitment to protecting the environment as the subject matter expert for all things relating to Forterra's ISO 14001 management system.
- Provide functional support and work with responsible managers and their teams to ensure the business is legally compliant, maintains its certification to ISO 14001 and does not cause harm to the environment.
- Work with other departments to ensure the business maintains its certifications to ISO 50001 and BES 6001.
- Assist with the creation of the internal and external environmental audit schedule for the business, working with the IMS Coordinator.
- Plan and conduct internal audits across Forterra to verify implementation of the management systems in accordance with ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 requirements.
- Be the primary point of assistance for external ISO14001 audits, attending sites to support as necessary.
- Report the findings from audits to the site and senior management teams.
- Ensure that all external audit findings are added into the relevant database on behalf of the sites, chase through the actions to completion and send discharge notices back to the certification bodies for formal close out.
- Provide functional support and advice to operational managers in all aspects of environmental management and protection, by being a visible presence on sites.
- Investigate significant permit breaches, providing an 'independent' view on behalf of management.
- Act as the leading expert for all Panel of Investigation's after any serious breach.
- Support the management and further development of the environmental elements of the IMS, specifically looking at sharing best practice from within the business, as well as from the wider industry sector and other manufacturing sectors.
- Support operational managers in the formulation of action plans with defined objectives, targets and responsibilities as part of Forterra's manufacturing excellence program.
- Promote awareness on environmental issues across the business, through targeted campaigns or formal training courses.
- Represent the company at trade associations on appropriate Environmental forums.
- Support internal and external communications and visibility as a Company spokesperson on environmental issues.
- Support communications strategies to publicise the Company's environmental efforts and promote broad awareness of environmental initiatives internally and externally.
- Develop and communicate environmental policies and procedures with operational management.
- Identify cost savings where possible and work with the procurement team to help them be realised.
- Work with the IMS Coordinator to maintain the company's legal registers (in support of the ISO management systems) and oversee the aspects and impacts registers for the business.
- Create and issue a monthly environmental management report for the business.
Job Requirements:
- Strong understanding of UK and European environmental regulatory framework and experience of managing in an environment that requires a detailed working knowledge of UK environmental regulations.
- Previous demonstrable competence in a specialist function.
- Ability to use computer systems (Intelex and SharePoint) plus Microsoft applications.
- Excellent understanding of how ISO14001 management systems are intended to work within a manufacturing environment.
- Liaising with external organisations and regulatory authorities.
- Carrying out incident investigations.
- Auditing environmental procedures and systems.
- Confident nature, with the ability to talk to operational management and promote and train the relevant sections of the Environmental Management systems.
- Ability to travel and attend sites throughout England, with occasional nights away if required.
Skills required:
- Essential: Internal Auditor qualification, IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management / NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate or equivalent, Excellent working knowledge and application of ISO14001 management systems, plus knowledge of ISO50001 and BES6001, Full driving licence.
- Desirable: IEMA Graduate or Practitioner Membership Level, ISO14001 Lead Auditor qualification, IOSH Managing Safety.
