Our programme enables you to earn while you learn, whilst also gaining vital experience and skills as you study towards a nationally recognised qualification.

The role involves keeping the lights on, impacting our customers as they go about their day. A Cable Jointer is at the heart of our network, helping us to power change through maintaining and upgrading the electricity network.

You will:

  • Assist with cable preparation for cable jointing and cable termination into transformers or switchgear.
  • Assist experienced Cable Jointers working on our HV & LV Network where you will undergo training whilst they joint both HV (high voltage 11KV - 33KV works) and LV (415V - 1000V), carrying out jointing, cabling and excavation work on a pre-planned and quick response basis, which may require an overnight stay.

The programme can take 18 to 24 months depending on your personal capabilities and is centred on an initial course at our training school followed by buddying with an experienced cable jointing team where you will build a portfolio of work which will allow you to gain authorisations to work on the network. By the end of the programme, you will have gained valuable on-the-job experience, learned new skills and gained an industry recognised qualification, enabling you to build a rewarding and successful career in the energy sector and contribute to the delivery of Net Zero.

This role can be demanding, and you will be required to respond quickly to emergency situations; we want to provide the best possible service to our customers in their time of need. This will involve working outdoors in all weather conditions with a requirement to undertake out of hours standby duties and short notice attendance for storm situations.

You will have:

  • A high regard for safety, embedding yourself in our safety culture and adhering to guidelines in everything you do.
  • Strong communication skills and an ability to convey technical aspects in a transferable manner.
  • Enthusiasm and drive with a flexible approach to work and an ability to adapt to changing business and project priorities.
  • A thirst for knowledge and training, and be able to pick up new skills quickly, working with others within a team to achieve common goals.
  • A strong focus on Health & Safety and will adhere to our company motto “if it’s not safe, we don’t do it.”
  • Hand skills: routinely stripping meter tails, using hand tools and fixing meters to boards.
  • Demonstrate an ability to use your initiative and planning to ensure that you have the proper equipment for the job at hand.
  • Be resilient to the continual changes within our sector and always focused on delivering great results.
  • Be flexible in your approach to work and understand the need to complete tasks effectively, to a high standard of quality whilst observing the highest levels of health and safety adherence.
