About the Role
Independent panels review requests from parents or carers to reconsider permanent exclusions. As part of our IRP 'pool', you will help us deliver statutory responsibilities in a fair, transparent, and timely manner.
Impact
Your participation will contribute to ensuring that exclusion reviews are conducted fairly, addressing concerns about unfair exclusion practices. During 2023-24, no reviews were requested, but national trends indicate increasing demand. Having a dedicated pool of panel members enables us to meet statutory deadlines efficiently.
Candidate Criteria
- A lay member with no prior school or trust employment, capable of managing meeting dynamics, critical thinking, understanding processes, and emotional intelligence. Knowledge of SEND is a plus.
- An experienced Headteacher.
- An experienced school governor (maintained school) or trustee (multi-academy trust).
Responsibilities
Attend independent exclusion review panels, ensuring parents receive a fair hearing and their case is carefully considered. Panels consist of three members: a lay chair, a school governor, and a headteacher, all with specific eligibility criteria to maintain impartiality.
Decision Outcomes
The panel can uphold the original decision, recommend reconsideration, or quash the decision if procedural flaws are identified.

This is a volunteer role supporting the trust's commitment to fair exclusion practices across its schools in North Birmingham, Tamworth, Lichfield, North Warwickshire, and Coventry.

Panel members must not have any connection to the child, parent, or school involved to ensure impartiality.
