As a Delivery Director on a fixed-term contract, you will play a pivotal role in leading and overseeing delivery teams to ensure projects are executed effectively and aligned with company strategies. You will be instrumental in managing project portfolios and fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement within the delivery function.
The Role
- Programme Leadership: Drive successful technical execution by orchestrating engineering and product teams, harmonising workstreams with the program roadmap, and offering mentorship while addressing the needs of stakeholders.
- Agile Planning & Cadence: Champion a consistent delivery rhythm through Agile practices. Take the lead in quarterly PI Planning and Scrum ceremonies, while maintaining metrics to monitor progress and spot potential challenges early on.
- Change Control & Risk Management: Oversee the programme's change control protocols and proactively address risks by managing a Technology RAID log, ensuring visibility on possible issues for timely solutions.
- Cross-Functional Coordination: Partner with Product, Engineering, QA, and Commercial teams to ensure seamless delivery and dismantle silos, fostering a collective vision.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as the primary contact for programme updates, delivering succinct progress reports to senior leadership and managing stakeholder expectations regarding program goals.
- Governance & Reporting: Lead governance forums and uphold accountability through regular meetings. Offer detailed dashboards that provide transparency on status, milestones, budget, and potential risks.
- Delivery Excellence: Advocate for best practices in Agile and lean delivery, mentor teams, and ensure adherence to quality standards by incorporating testing and security reviews into the delivery framework.
- Customer Migration Oversight: Oversee the planning and execution of customer migrations, coordinating activities to minimise disruptions and managing readiness and contingency strategies.
The Person
- Proven Programme Delivery Expertise: Extensive experience delivering complex software programmes in a SaaS environment, ideally 8-10+ years in project/program management roles. A track record of successfully leading large-scale technology initiatives from inception through launch, including multi-team or multi-phase projects. Experience with cloud replatforming or infrastructure modernisation projects (e.g. moving on-premise systems to cloud) and associated customer migrations is highly desirable.
- Agile & Scaled Agile Knowledge: Deep knowledge of Agile methodologies (Scrum and Kanban) and experience with scaled Agile practices (SAFe & LeSS). Hands-on experience with PI Planning and the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) or similar is required - the candidate should be comfortable orchestrating planning across multiple teams and agile release trains. Ability to adapt and apply the right blend of Agile and traditional project management as needed.
- Change & Risk Management Skills: Strong skills in change control, risk identification, and mitigation. Familiarity with maintaining RAID logs and leading formal change approval processes for scope/time/budget changes. Demonstrated ability to anticipate risks and address issues proactively so that the programme can stay on track.
- Stakeholder Management & Communication: Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Proven ability to engage, inform, and influence stakeholders at all levels, including senior executives and board members. Comfort in presenting programme updates, negotiating priorities, and setting clear expectations. Able to build trust and consensus across diverse groups, and to handle sensitive information or difficult discussions with tact and clarity.
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Experience working in a matrixed environment where success depends on collaboration across product management, engineering, architecture, QA, and commercial/business teams. Adept at influencing without direct authority, aligning teams to a common goal, and resolving inter-departmental conflicts or misalignments.
- Analytical and Metrics-Driven: Highly analytical mindset with the ability to define and track relevant delivery metrics (e.g. throughput, cycle time, burn-up, budget burn rate). Proficient in using project management and collaboration tools (specifically Jira & Confluence) to monitor progress and produce insight-rich reports. A data-driven approach to identifying bottlenecks and continuous improvement opportunities in the delivery process.
- Organisation and Autonomy: Excellent organisational skills with meticulous attention to detail. Capable of managing multiple workstreams and tasks simultaneously, prioritising effectively under pressure. A self-starter who takes initiative - able to bring order to ambiguity, set up necessary processes from scratch, and drive execution with minimal guidance.
- Technical and Business Acumen: Solid understanding of software development and cloud technology principles to effectively engage with architects and engineers on technical issues. Equally, a good grasp of business drivers and product strategy to ensure the programme delivers true business value. The ability to translate between technical and non-technical stakeholders is essential.
