To provide expert support to the Particle Physics Experiment (PPE) Group at the University of Glasgow, focusing on supplying readout electronics and high-voltage systems for the Mighty Tracker and Vertex Locator projects. The role involves integrating these systems within mechanical constraints, with other electronics systems, and with the LHCb Upgrade II data acquisition system.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead development and adaptation of readout electronic printed circuit boards for the LHCb Upgrade 2 Mighty Tracker and VELO detectors, utilizing dedicated ASICs and FPGAs.
  • Design, fabricate, and test prototype electro-optical (E/O) readout systems for the Mighty Tracker, including validation of readout boards and testing full link sets.
  • Design and test high-speed data transmission (GHz range) for the VELO.
  • Provide expertise in electronics board design, characterization, testing, and quality control.
  • Work autonomously, report weekly, and prioritize tasks based on technical papers and collaboration meetings.
  • Supervise or manage junior team members and students, creating plans, schedules, and monitoring progress.
  • Collaborate with European universities and laboratories.
  • Represent the university at national and international collaboration meetings, providing reports.
  • Set up measurement systems to characterize printed circuit boards and electronics with a team of physicists, engineers, and technicians.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

Essential:

  • Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 or equivalent, with experience in electronics engineering.
  • Strong PCB design background with relevant software skills.
  • Knowledge of PCB manufacturing and assembly processes.
  • Experience testing semiconductor sensors and electronics PCBs.
  • Level 9 qualification or equivalent, with relevant experience.
  • Design, development, debugging of electronic circuits.
  • Design of PCBs, testing, quality assurance.
  • Project management, initiative, and communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office tools.

Desirable:

  • Experience with PCB design tools like Altium or Cadence.
  • Programming skills in Python and/or Matlab.
  • FPGA firmware programming experience.
  • Semiconductor simulation tools experience.

Experience:

Significant relevant work or research experience.

Terms and Conditions:

Salary: Grade 6/7, £33,232 - £36,024 or £39,347 - £44,263 per annum. Full-time, 35 hours/week. Funding for up to 2 years. The university values an inclusive community and complies with UK employment eligibility requirements. Visa sponsorship may be required for non-UK residents.
