CMS2 is a specialist equipment manufacturer supplying maritime atmosphere control systems and life of system support services. We are experts in enabling high availability atmosphere management systems to generate breathable air for submariners, allowing boats to remain underwater for long periods of time. We do this by combining over sixty years of expertise with the latest technology and processes to design, build and support high quality systems and solutions.
We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineering placement student to join our CMS2 team in Portsmouth for a twelve-month period. The Placement to commence in August 2025. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in a forward-thinking team, who are working on sharing innovative solutions or manufacturing bespoke engineering systems. In return, you will be joining a company who are growing and looking to provide you with the opportunity to gain some excellent experience to support your future career. We will support you in expanding your skills and capabilities and the team around you. We may also be able to offer some part time work during the final year of university and if we have space a graduate position upon graduation.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and update manufacturing and assembly drawings in line with company standards and best practices and in accordance with BS8888 using Solidworks.
- Support the development of new products and updates to existing products.
- Maintain project BOMs.
- Investigate component requirements to support with the creation and update to written component specifications and to make appropriate component selections.
- Undertake calculations and simulations to support design decisions.
- Work under the direction of the Design Engineers to ensure that activities undertaken align with the customer requirements and project deliverables.
- Provide support to production teams during the build process to clarify and resolve any design issues or queries.
- Follow CMS2 processes and procedures relating to the project activities.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Working towards completion of Mechanical Engineering Degree or similar.
- Flexibility, enthusiasm, self-motivated and able to work well under own initiative.
- Ability to interact with colleagues, customers and suppliers in a professional manner.
- A willingness to learn new skills and to take on new challenges.
- A confident communicator who is professionally presented.
Nice To Have But Not a Necessity
- Experience of a project environment.
- Adept with PC software applications (Word, Excel, MathCAD, Solidworks).
- Decision-making / problem solving skills.
- Practical competence in mechanical assembly.
- Experience of working within a Defence environment.
- Knowledge of BS8888 Technical Product Documentation and Specification.
- Knowledge of ISO9000 or a similar QA system.
- Experience with a Product Data Management system.
