The ambulatory pharmacy technician provides integrated support to patients, pharmacists and providers by utilizing a 'hands-on' approach to total quality patient care through the delivery of a full continuum of medication access and adherence support.

Responsibilities:

  • Interpret and enter prescriptions; clarify prescription orders with pharmacist and/or clinician as appropriate.
  • Label and fill prescriptions for the pharmacist to verify.
  • Perform pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Identify medications requiring special storage and/or handling such as hazardous medications and/or refrigerated medication.
  • Identify and assemble supplies necessary for select medications such as sharps containers, needles/syringes, alcohol swabs, Band-Aids.
  • Prepare medication for delivery to patients and departments.
  • Provide medication delivery services to patients within hospitals.
  • Answer, resolve and triage inbound inquiries.
  • Provide outbound therapy/medication adherence check-ups.
  • Secure refill prescriptions.
  • Resolve insurance related issues and assist patients with applying for various forms of medication financial assistance including patient assistance applications, copay cards, and Medicare Extra Help enrollment.
  • Maintain pharmacy inventory including drug ordering and receiving.
  • Communicate directly with patients over the phone to assist them in the awareness of their medications and address any concerns.
  • Achieve operational objectives by inputting data, performing adjudication on test claims and preparing action plans for follow-up.
  • Manage, organize, and update relevant data using database applications.
  • Apply observations and recommendations to operational issues, increased productivity, quality, and customer-service standards.
  • Identify trends, resolve problems, recommend improvements, and implement change.
  • Actively participate in process improvement initiatives.
  • Act as a value-added business partner to stakeholders throughout the organization.
  • Protect the organization's value by keeping information confidential.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.
  • Complete all medication prior authorization requests for non-specialty medications and facilitate appeal process when indicated.
  • Document all direct patient care activities, including but not limited to medication access-related requests and adherence support as a “Patient Outreach” within Epic hyperspace.
  • Coordinate with care team to resolve any medication-access related issues to ensure timely patient access to medications.
  • Support Ambulatory Care Pharmacists with scheduling patient appointments (e.g., Annual Wellness Visits), screening work queue referrals and triaging appropriately.
  • Communicate outcomes of medication access requests/referrals to appropriate healthcare team members in Epic Hyperspace.
  • Address all medication access and prior authorization requests sent to the Care New England Pharmacy Techs Pool.
  • Assist primary care providers and support staff with processing of refill requests.
  • Develop and maintain document with patient assistance program application guidelines.
  • Conduct medication adherence outreach calls.

Job Qualifications and Specifications:

  • Required Licensure/Certification: Applicant must be registered in the State of Rhode Island as a Pharmacy Technician. National certification as a CPhT must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • Years of Experience: Required 1+ year, Preferred 5+ years’ experience as a Pharmacy Technician.
