We're looking for a Junior AI Engineer to elevate our AI‑powered experiences at Memrise—starting with higher‑quality AI powered learning features and extending to a smarter recommendations engine that surfaces the right learning features at the right moment. You'll iterate quickly on prompt chains, expanding languages coverage, and shipping evaluation tooling so we can release improvements with confidence. You relentlessly explore new LLM workflows, document what works, and move the metrics that matter.
Key Responsibilities
- Prompt & RAG Engineering - Design, tune, and A/B‑test prompts and prompt chains that lift instruction‑following accuracy, session‑completion detection, and overall AI experiences engagement. Implement retrieval‑augmented generation pipelines for support and in‑product answers.
- Multi‑language Scale‑out - Modularise prompting architecture so that the quality of the experience can be optimised for each language pair; create frameworks to evaluate quality across languages.
- Recommendations Engine - Prototype and productionise an engine that recommends the next best learning feature.
- Evaluation & Observability - Build a robust framework—automated tests, offline benchmarks, and live monitoring—that verifies AI quality pre‑launch and drives ongoing improvements from real‑world production results.
- Collaboration & Ownership - Work daily with cross‑functional partners in Content, Product, and Engineering, proactively owning high‑leverage deliverables.
Requirements
Core Competencies
- Strong ownership & bias‑to‑action - You take clear ownership, proactively driving tasks from idea to completion.
- Relentless curiosity & rapid tool adoption - You quickly master and share new LLM workflows.
- Applied prompt & RAG skills - You've tuned prompts and paired them with retrieval to improve answer quality.
- Practical product coding - You write clean Python or Kotlin code.
- Disciplined documentation - You leave clear READMEs, wikis and decision logs the team can rely on.
Bonus points: Experience with recommender systems; CI/CD familiarity.
You’ll Thrive Here If You
- Love turning cutting‑edge AI research into products people actually use.
- Iterate fast, learn from data even faster.
- Are passionate about language, learning, and AI.
- Value clear writing almost as much as clean code.
Whilst we are big fans of AI, we do review each CV individually. A short cover letter or a few punchy sentences about why you’re excited to join Memrise would go a long way. Bonus points if you get the company name right - you’d be surprised.
Benefits
- Generous Learning & Development budget (courses, conferences, books, + L&D leave).
- Enhanced Parental Leave.
- Flexible working hours and hybrid options.
- Private health insurance with Vitality.
- Dental insurance with Unum.
- Remote socials, talks, and team events.
